Jacksonville has n new acting postmaster, Us Louis I'lrlch. present postmaster whose term expired last I June nnd who hits been holding over until his auceessor Is uppolnted, re- eelved a telegram lust night from the postofflcc- department ut Washing ton, neerptlng his resignation nnd announcing the appointment of John F. Miller to tie uctlng postmaster until tho appointment of a perma nent postmaster Is made. The change takes place Monday, May t. Mr. I'lrlch, always it good demo crat, has tdud a glorious luster on the Wilson administration, Kven during tho darkest hours of that late defunct organiatlon the party men everywhero looked with prtdo toward Jacksonville and cheered up. Hut Louie, although always a party pa triot, could no longer hear to 'be a hold-over under a republican admin istration when all his fellow com patriots In office had gone Into the discard, their places having been filled by tat, healthy, optimistic re publicans, who see nothing but happy days ahead for four years. lie got to thinking It over ntithl before last, he says, und realising that tho country was going . to the dogs fast under republican rule and fearing that some of that party's taint mlKhtclIng to him If he re mulned In office any longer, lie called for his liorsu and galloped over to Medford at once, where h tele Kraphed his resignation to Wushlns ton. Another thing which Influenced this move wus that his ublu assistant, U. It. Chapman, who has had charge of the office for several months, us quilting Monday to take up another and better position, which would leave the holdover postmaster in n bad fix, us he had moved to Medford and Is In business here. When I'lrieh's resignation tele gram reached Washington It created a great Knock there. Post master tleneiai Work hot-footed It ut once over to the While House and broke the sad news to that already much Worried man. President Harding. The cabinet was hurriedly called Into session anil after having hud the matter under consideration all night Thursday nnd all day Friday, finally reluctantly decided to accept the rexlKnullon. after the president had remarked that as Louie is a brother Klk the administration should help him out of his fix. and after the post. master general had remarked sadly that perhaps another man could be found in Jacksonville who might rome somewhere near filling the Job there as Rood as Louie. The examination of the half dnaen Joeksonvlllo aspirants for the county Seat postoffh-e wo held some time ago, but no appointment has yet been made ft Mr. I'lrieh's permanent successor. ' beeausM the list of ellgl b:es has not been reported by the i ivll service eommlssiou. The fact j that Jolin r. Miller Is one ol tue run dtdntes for the appointment, has 1ccn appointed actinic postmaster, has the other candidates guessing. NOTICE!
