HulM con ducted services at the Applegate school house Wednesday the 26th. The movement for the consolidation of the Applegate and Thompson creek schools was voted out at the meeting beJd the 21st. Mr. Ben. t Collins of Grants Pass waa a visitor at the home of Mrs. John V. Pernoll Sunday. Miss Eva Couch is a house guest ot her sister, Mrs. John W. Pernoll. Although the season is very early and the water somewhat chilly several of Uie A. H. S. boys went bathing Fri- uy. The school gave a very successful bos social, entertainment and free dance last Friday night at the hall. About 3" was received from the sale of the boxes,- and 922 from the gate, I4i(l coffee, which the community ladles supplied. Aahton and Joe Foerst accompanied by Floyd Melds visited at the home of Ben. Kills Sunday. Mr. Christesen and family spent Sunday visiting relatives in Ashland. A dance will be given at the Apple gate hall Friday. April 28. A chicken upper will be served by the ladles of the , community. Music by Buster fyrown orchestra ot Grants Pass. Miss Edith Kublt spent the week end at home. She Is teaching school St BrowDsbora The Junior and Senior play was stajroi! last Friday evenins before a large audience. The people say that this was the best piny ever put on in Phoenix, From what the writer can gather no one ran decide who the star was. then it goes without Baying all were stars. Each character was well suited to the part and the play was well learned. The audience was car ried to the highest key of interest to tell who the real Ted was. The great day is fast approaching, "the field meet" which will be held at Talent next Friday. The officers have boen drilling for the battle; "the cup will be ours" is the battle cry. Pesldes the country schools, the fol lowing schools will meet on the grid iron: Talent, Jacksonville. Applecate, Rogue River. Gold Hill, llntte Falls, Central Point and Phoenix. These I eight will contest for the cup. There 'will be something doing all the time. ilrove school house Inst Smuluy morn ing. Mr. and Mrs. U. K. Kichman, Miss Horrell and Frank Wooldrtdge visited friends on the Applegate last Sunday. The rattle, men in this locality are branding their cattle and driving thorn to the range, Mrs. Carta and her pupils gave n short but interesting program last Fri day afternoon, the pupils had a very creditable dvawing on display. Mr. and Mrs. Will Wills were Grants Pass visitors last Thursday. Mr. Hostwlck and Mr. Suiithpeter art busy putting in garden. They are both going into truck gardening on rather an extensive scale this summer. Fdward Hlllis re-entered school last Tuesday after several weeks absence on account of the flu. Frank Wooldridge returned to his home on the Applegate last Tuesday after spending several days at R. E. Richman's. Mrs. McConville returned home last Monday from San Francisco where she has been visiting her cousin since last January. - , Mr. King of Medford, Sunday school missionary, spent a few days in this vicinity last week and organized a Sunday school at Mays creek while here and held services at the Pine Last Saturday Mr. and Mis. E, C. N'ygren and her mother, Mrs. Ralph Gardner of Lake Creek were here trading with our merchants. Geo. McDonald. C. H. Natwlck. C. A. Pickel, the electric meter reader for the California-Oregon Power Co, Chris Peale, the man who has been carrying tho mall during the time ot the win ter schedule, three traveling salesmen and two strangers who came in of the Butte Falls stage were here for din ner Saturday. Sunday morning as the mail carrier from here to Medford and back (while we have a daily mall from here to Medford and back twice a day we have only one service each way from Eagle Point to Medford), as the car was com ing in from Medford, just before it reached the Crater Lake highway. It took fire and the driver had a!J that he could do to save tho mall from the flames. The car, a Cole, was com pletely consumed. It was partially In sured. When W. G. Kuight ami A. J. Florey were going up the Cingcaile hill they discovered the smoke and hurried cn up to see what it was and met the nwUl carrier with the lock sack on his shoulder, picked him up and went on to where tho car was burned, took in the rest of the mall and brought it on to the postofflce. We all feel sorry for him for he has had a hard time getting, through with the mall the past wluter.l He started on his summer schedule last Monday morning for tho round J trip or 100 miles, and seemed, to got along very well as he came Into Eagle Point postofflce on time. Sunday morning broke upon us bright and clear and we had our regu lar Sunday school and preaching ser vices, with a very fair attendance. In the afternoon thw Antelope base ball team came over and played a game with the Eagle Point hall team and took the word home with them that they came out second best with the score standing 18 to 7 In favor of Eagle Point. There were quite a number of peo ple called for dinner at the Sunnyslde. Among them were Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Hissing and son Carroll of Medford, Miss Olive'Calnest of Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Moore. Medford. P. U. Churchill, Miss Grace Churchill. Sioux Falls, touth Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Neff. Mrs. Nichols. Medford, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Pruett, Thomas F. Carlton and his brother Lyle i and Profee Walrh of Wellen were also here taking part In the ball gnme. Two of our regular boarders who have been with us for a long time, left us Monday morula?. Geo. H. Wehmun and Lois Martin, Mr. Wehman to take charge of tho bookkeeping depnrtinent of the road work from Ilole-ln-lhe-Oround to Prospect, and Mr. Martin to have charge of the rock work on the same road for William Von der Ilellen. the sub-contractor. Planey Lea bo and F. A. Whaley went back to resume their Jobs on the extension ot the P. & E. R. R. Mr. Whaley came out with his sick wife from Butte Falls and stopped at the Sunnyslde and remain ed here with her until Monday and as she was gaining so rapidly he thought that it would be safe to leave her in the care of hr daughter, Mlas Rosa, who has been assisting in the duties in the hotel. Dr. Holt of Medford was called In to seo the patient. It appears that the principle trouble with her was the altitude of Ilutte Falls as she commenced to improve as soon as she got here. Ed Cowdon. Leroy 3mlth. Carl Stan ley and Mrs. Fred Dutton were among the business callers on our merchants Monday. , Wm. Perry, our efficient road super visor waa in town and while here It had a short interview with him and learned that he Is keeping tennis-on the roads all the time trying; to put them In shape so as to be traveled. He spoke of a change to be made on the road between the Crater Lake highway and the Dodge-French bridge, a new survey from the bridge to go by the Fred Pettygrew place and thus avoid the Hog Creek hill and a bad lot of sticky. He said that he did not know whether that ppce of road would be built by the county or by contract, but seemed to think mat it would be a good change as it would be on so much better ground and but very little fur ther. Mrs. Fred Dutton pf Wellen was a business caller Monday. Alex' Vestal and .Geo. McDonald were here for dinner Monday. John Long of Derby came out with a team Tuesday and took back a load of hay and grain. He is planning to go to work on the county road in a short time. John Allen the road supervisor for the Derby district has a force of mea witn teams working on the roads trying to get them in shape so that people can travel them with aome de gree of safety. There are a few who are running over the Futte Falls-Eagle Point roada now but report that they re very rough, but the scraping that Is being done on them is helping them they say. ' We have had another change in real estate in our town, Wm. Green Knigh ton having sold his home place to John Rader, one of our leading stock men and farmers. They took formal pos session Tuesday but do not expect to move onto the place until fall. We regret to have Mr. Knighton leave us but resign to the will of Him who does all things right. Since Mr. Knighton has lost his wife he has decided thut it will be better for him to go and live with his grandchildren than to try to live alone as he Is now in his eighty sixth year. A. J. Florey who has had his wife In Medford has moved back Into his home again with their new baby. Miss June Hlnman of Medford, and A. G. Irish of Spokanef were here for dinner Tuesday. They are working In the Interest of the Eurl Fruit Co. Itev. H. G. Adams will preach In Brownsboro on 8unday morning and in Lagle Point in the evening at 7:30 Warren Lammey who has been working on the P. & E. railroad exten sion came out Tuesday. He is suffer ing with an attack of tonsllitls. His mother and younger brother have been living in the house known as the Rob- inett house Mr. McKIhsIc, tho civil engineer who has charge of that line of work on the proposed canal from Big Butte has moved into the J.
