Mrs. Sara North died at Medford.
Ore., April 16. from Infirmities due to
old age. aged 81 years, 2 months, 7
days. She was born at Carbondale,
Pa., Feb. 9, 1941, and was the widow
of M. J. North, a Civil war veteran,
who died In Missouri 19 years ago.
Mrs. North hmt been a resident cf
Medford for the past eight years and
was a member of the Presbyterian
church. She leaves one sister, Mrs.
V. H. Canon. Koaeburg. Ore., nieces
and nephews: Mrs. E. M. Jenson, V.
L. Lamb and Dana C. Lamb, of Fond
du Lac. Wta.; Mrs. J. A. Van Hecke
of Chicago. 111.: Mrs. R. D. Walker of
Lcs Angeles. Calif.; Stansbury Taylor

The pool hall at Phoenix, owned by
Lyle Walters, was, totally destroyed
by fire early this morning, entailing
a loss of about $5,000. Tbe, origin
of tho blaze is unknown, but It Is
supposed to have, started from a stovo
In the back room. The entire coun
tryside turned out . to fight the
flames, and saved tbe Phoenix Mer
cantile company stock and building
after a hard struggle.
The fire burned down a high pow
er line of tho California Oregon Pow
er company, and shut off tbe clec
trie heat in the Incubators of tbe
Whlto Wing Poultry farm. Linemen
wero pbond for, and connected up
the current before the incubators be
came chilled,- saving hundreds of
young chickens-to-be.
Tbe burning of the high tension
wire also shut off all lights in Med
ford and vicinity for about a half hour.
While tho fire was at Its height the
Modford tire department was phoned
to for help at 1:10 a. m., and Chief
Lawton and one fireman with the
extra book and ladder and hose truck
responded, but arrived too late to be
of any assistance. This act of cour
tesy on the part of the local fire de
partment made a hit with the people
of Phoenix. Chief Lawton pralaes the
work of tbe Phoenix department in
holding the fire to tbe destroyed structure.
