But what of it! The happy couple differ only from other happy
couples iu the world in the fact that their children will not have the
tremendous advantage in the race of' life which comes to young
people who have to get out and make names and fortunes and places
for themselves, but instead will have these things all bred for them,
great hindering humps on their backs grow n there by other people's
toil. And that's that.
Some time this spring the great

The happy couple, will differ from other happy couples only in the
fact that her folks will sniff at his folks, instead of having his folks

that. And. also, them's them.
What of it? Why the' excitement? What's all the shoot in' about ?

THE SLAYERS.
THE murderers, in countless scores, ure loafing in a hundred
t jails, all hoping that the prison doors will open when their
luck prevails. Xo doubt they think the law is rank that jails
them, 'even for a time, for pulling off onie playful prank, like
murder, or a kindred crime. In cozy cells the slayers nit ; and
nil around them quiet reigns; red-handed ladies calmly knit, and
gory gents niiike horsehair chains. They loll around in gilded
ease, they labor not and bear no yoke; we used to hang such birds
as these long since when justice was no joke. But now there's no
such, doom as that for those who butcher fellow-guys; the gloomy
hangman 's growing fat, for-lack of wholesome exercise. The
murderers are borne to jail vvhen fiit their crimes have made us
stare, and there's some piffle, flat and stale, about the gallows or
the chair. And then we turn our thoughts away, to other grafts,
the coin we chase; and on the street, some pleasant day, we meet
the killers face to face. They've been paroled or pardoned out,
some witness flunked, some juror died; some enterprising legal
scout has founds loophole, big and wide. ' And thus our modern
justice runs where it's concerned with slayer skates; they're
going now to purchase guns to kill some other delegates.

LET S PAINT, CLEAN UP AND BEAUTIFY MEDFORD.
THIS is llie beginning of I'aint and I'lruu l'p A'eelt, locally
and nationally mid let's take this clean-up business no
rjously. The town is mt distressingly dirty, hut always at the
end of winter a lot of trash is found kicking about that clutters
up the landscape, Kvery individual householder etui take an
hour or two and find rubbish around Jhe premises that went im
pot iced before. And when he gets it cleaned up. he will feel us
virtuous as a senium ry htudrnt after his first senium to a choice
lot of hardened old siuiicl's,
The dirt is going out. of course, going out in fine fashion, And
when the backyards and the alleys and the basements mid the
woodsheds and all other tirtsh-aeeiiinulatiiig jihieen have been
cleaned out, let's keep tlniii clean, Moreover, let's beautify the
town this year. The past two or three seasons we have made a
good start. A few householders have slicked up their front yards,
planted flowers and kept the dandelions down, hut the rest of us
just poked along ami allowed the weeds to take us.
That's bad. It is not iu accord with Med ford's eleiuicut fash
ion of doing things. Let's expel the dirt and the rubbish, but let's
plant beauty spots flower beds and shrubs and trees-ami keep
the lawns and parkings cut and well watered, ami watch the old
town loom up like the tiardeu of Eden.
There will he satisfaction and pleasure in doing this that will
far outweigh the little effort ami expense involved.
Mcautify Medford and keep her beautiful.
