There huvo been four jury disagreements in tis many important trials in the last few months. Two disagreements in the Fatty Arbuoklo ease, a tlis- iigreemont in the Durch ease and now u disagreement in tho Oben chuinase. According to the state officials there were suspicious circum stances surrounding all the disagreements, and investigations involv ing perjury and corruption charges, are contemplated. Certainly where there is so much smoke there must be some fire. It is to he hoped the state officials of California probe this de plorable condition to the bottom. Once destroy public confidence in the jury system and the very framework of enr civilization totters. Nothing could be better for California or for the country at large than a few convictions for perjury and corruption, and a few sen tences to the penitentiary iur those who are really guilty of thus sewing the seeds of lawlessness and violence. IF WINTER COMES. la the senseless backbiting preva lent in. humanity at this time, and the tidal wave of agitation that ranges from the seething unrest in India, to the small town quarrelling over what church John Jones belongs to. there is grounds to doubt the famous truth of Robert G. Ingersoll. "that civiliiation hangs by a pair of suspenders." The suspenders seem to have come apart where they cross in Jhe back, with three buttons gone in front. The world is- suffering from an overdose of the New Era" bunk, and the "New Free dom" bosh. - What creation needs is a little more sociability; a lot more of the Golden Rule. Unless the masses nd the classes snap out of it pretty- soon Russia will not be the only coun try hopelessly nutty. . ;.:.y: : ' A no, of people are suffering from what is generally known as spring feveri with symptoms of it all winter. TMIK world is out of joint. So says Lord Nortlicliffe, and he X speaks with authority for he has just completed a tour of its surface. His Lordship is probably right The spiritual exaltation of tin war has passed. Discontent, unrest, suspicion, distrust almost uni versally prevail. One sees the manifestations here, there, and every. where; in Washington, in Vlster, in Calcutta, in Angora, Hut we can t share the Nortlicliffe hopelessness. These reactions r.re inevitable. The Pendulum swings to and fro. but its net progress is onward. After the rain comes the sunshine, and beyond the clouds which reach to the horizon, the same little lambkins are gamboling cu the green. This is not entirely Polyanua stuff. It is really one of the funda mental laws of Nature. One need not be an incorrigible optimist to conclude that the Northcliffe liver is slightly disarranged. Oue need mly be historically scientific. Walt Mason .THE STREET. MY R00JI is near the village street, too close to traffic mad dening, and all night long I hear the feet of foolish people gadding. Hour after hour I hear their tread, their midnight vigils keeping; how people hate to go to bed and do some useful sleeping ! I hear the tin cars climb the hill, a-honking and a-horn-ing, and flappers' voices rising shrill, at 3:10 in (he morning. We used to have our fun by day, by day we did our choring; when evening came we hit the hay and did some fancy snoring. If any man sent up a yawp that sleepers found disturbing, he'd run against the village cop, who'd slam him to the curbing. But weary people have no rights in this gray world of sorrow; they lie in bed awake o' nights, and long to greet the morrow. The young folks whoop beneath tha stars, and yell and sing and clamor, and poisoned pups and J lenity cars all help to swell the clamor. The midnight hour no comfort has, there's little chance for dreaming, for all the night is full of jazz and yips and flappers' screaming. And so the old folks yearn and weep for saintly nights departed, when they could lay them down and sleep and get up cheery heurted.
