While the. instrument, the bronchoscopo, as it I called, in little known to the lay public, physician ald its use for the removal of foreign objects from the lung arid Htomach is quite common and that clinic are held throughout th country. . , .- : The bronchoscope appears simple enough to tho eye. Roughly, it ia a ttr&ight meUil tiite, more than one quarter of an inch in diameter and about 15 1-3 Inches long. A tiny wire ru'ho down the tube and there is an electric light at the bottom which enables the surgeon to ace into the interior of tho tunics, bronchus or stomach. , Tho foreign object ia first located by weans of X-rays, and then the tube inserted through the mouth Into the lung- or stomach. An espec ially designed pair of forceps is then Inserted through tho tube into tho part affected and the object removed. The operation is often bloodless and requires but a few minutes. It has been known for a patient to leave the hospital within a few minutes after the operation, and when ho had entered his life was in jeopardy from the introduction of a foreign sub stance into vital parts of his body. (Among various objects that have been removed from the lungs or stomachs of patients in this city are safety pins, common pins, hat pins, false teeth, tacks, sewing needles, staples, hypodermic needles, , coins and watch charms.
