"Uncle" Joe has not yet filed his
petition as a candidate. His failure
to do this yesterday, (ho first day of
thn filings, has set the political gos
sips bunxlng with speculation, al-,
t hough tho petition, may bo filed any
time before March 2. .
Only one man has thus far broken
these ranks. He Is State Represen
tative William P. Holaday, who an
nounced recently that he would be
candidate before the April primaries
regardless of "Uncle" Joe's decision.

political intentions for the immediate
future are, is a question. A few
months ago when It was announced in
Chicago that Uncle Joe would not
again be a candidate, preparations
were being made by several to an
nounce their candidacies, .when word

the senate yesterday by President
Harding as the products of the Wash

The four power treaty was taken
up first today by mutual consent. It
was said. It was read and re-read
at the initial committee meeting; with
lengthy explanations of various
phrases made by. Senator Lodge of
Massachusetts, chairman and one of
the American delegates to the con
ference. .
Senator Lodge, after the session,
said that it was probable the commit
tee would ,not consider the seven
treaties at one time but would report
out each treaty as its consideration
was finished.
Friends of the four power treaty
expressed satisfaction over the pro
gress of the' first committee session.

noon that a conference of police and
sheriff Investigators ht been calied
with him to determine the program for
today and tonight with examination of.

"Considerable work has been done
outside of the examination of wit
nesses in my office," Woolwine said,
"and this examination is really but a
small part of the investigation. Results
tbtts far are that the investigation has
been entirely devoid of workable clcss.
Scores of angles have been Investigat
ed but we have not been able to get a
toe-hold in the case leading to the solu
tion."
Examination of witnesses was re
newed this afternoon when a young
man attired in a chauffeur's uniform
was taken into the district attorney's
office.
Following the examination the dis
trict attorney said the young man was
Frank Britt, living In the vicinity or
the house in which Taylorwas slain
and had been questioned in regard to
reports that he had seen a stranger
near: the Taylor house acting suspic
iously on the night of the murder.
Captain of Detectives David L.
Adams, announced, later that police in
vestigation of Thlele onvjnced him
that Thieie had no connection with nor
could he furnish any information con
cerning the Taylor 'case. " A blood
stainjid cap found in Th'lele's room,
the captain said, has no bearing on the
Taylor investigation, . .
Suspect Not Sands '
FRESNO. Cal., Feb. 11. "There's
absolutely nothing to it," said Sherirf
W. F. Jones this morning, regarding a
report that Edward F. Sands, wanted
by the Los Angeles police in connec
tion. with the murder of William Des
mond Taylor, a motion picture director
was in hidlns near Lanes Bridge, over
the San Joaquin river.
"The man believed to be Sands (a
Harry Sandburn. He has been camped
there-for two months" (
Sandburn does not answer the de
scription of the missing butler, accord
ing to Sheriff Jones. .

Indications were said to have been
given that there would be considera
ble democratic support for the four
power treaty. There was no definite
declaration today from any quarter
of opposition to the treaty and neith
er was the question of reservations
brought up. A half dozen of the com
mittee members, iucluding some of
both political purties, however, were
not present today.
