WE'RE WITH YOU POP I
Up OP" GATES has pone to Portland aain. We hope he gets
what he is after. As we understand it ho is after endorsement
for the (foveruorship.
It's about time Southern Oropon had a governor and "Pop" would
make an excellent one. What Oregon particularly needs in the next
few years is a pood business man at the helm, and "Pop" is all that.
Moreover, lie has other qualifications, a great mixer, personal
charm, honesty and force. s
"Pop" would put "Pep" into the state house. No mess would
grow on the cupalo during his incumbency. There would bo some
thing doing every minute, Moreover "Pop" would put Medford and
Jackson county on the map, so if he should get the nomination, he can
depend upon Southern Oregon being behind him, with a tiger,
i , There is a general impression, even among some of "Pop's" best
friends, that Medford's mayor is having his leg pulled. That may be.
Hut what of itt No political candidate can get anywhere these days
without a certain elasticity in his pedal extremeties. It's in the game.
The point is, no one in Southern Oregon can hope to get near the
state house without being subjected to a certain amount of exploita
tion, if "Pop" is willing to stand the gaff, we fail to see why any
one else should worry.
Yfe would like to see a Jackson county man governor, and "Pop"
is the only man hereabouts with a ghost of a chance. It may be.
undoubtedly is, a one-to-ten shot, but long shots have won before, and
may win again. So the attempt is worth the effort and we wish
"Top" every success in his third invasion of Multnomah. If he gets
what he is after well and good, we will be behind him with both feet,
if he doesn't, well, there will be no harm done.

THE MISFITS.
IN MY TALL rocking chair I sit, and think about the human
race; how seldom 'tis a man will fit just right in his appointed
place! I see the failures driftng by, the men who've fought their
fight and lost; they view their records with a sigh, and know
the future is a frost. Yon failure tinkers at the law, and finds
the statutes are a bore; why did he such a lemou draw! lie's
built. to run a corner store. Oh, he'd be happy selling quarts of
vinegar, all flecked with foam; but he is doomed to talk of torts
and leases till the cows come home. He'd wrap salt codfish in a
poke, and weigh out prunes with glee and vim; then why did fate
spring such a joke, and make a lawyer out of him! And yonder
grocer selling slaw and pickled figs and potted steers he has a
talent for the law; he'd make a jury melt in tears. In dreams
he argues in court, and hears astonishetT people say "Dan Webster
seems a tinhorn sport compared with this toplofty jay," He
hutes to labor in a torc, and sell old cheese and marmalade, and
so he makes his patrons sore, and every day he loses trade. "Would
there be failure if all men might do the things they most desire,
if every author had u pen, and every poet had a lyre 7

WASHINGTON. Feb. 10. Price fix
Ing by the government except in emer-J

dock, a member of the federal trade
commission declared today at a hear
ing before the house agricultural com
mittee which is considering a bill by
Representative Sinclair, republican,
North Dakota, to provide for annual
fixing by a commission of government
officials of maximum prices for certain
family products.
"No one can occupy the place I have
with the federal traae commission
without looking with suspicion on gov

Murdock, adding that such a policy
might be the only means of affording
relief temporarily during emergencies.
Declaring that farmers aro unable to

of producers, Mr, Murdock contended
that they needed the Bpeclal consldera
