A duty of two cents a pound on Cuban raw sugar as compared with the present emer gency rate of 1.6 couts and the one cent in the Underwood tariff law was asked of the senate finance committee today by the United States Sugar Manufacturing association through O. W. McCormick, a beet sugar manufac turer of Menominee, Mich. American beet sugar producers must have five cents a pound for the fin ished product f.o.b. factory, Mr, Mc Cormick said, and since Cuban raw sugar can be laid down at tho refiner ies in this country at two cents n pound a 2-cent duty is necessary unless the beet sugar industry is to be destroyed. Every beet sugar factory took a "staggering loss" on the 1920-21 crop, he continued adding that the entire industry now is on "the verge of dis aster." He asserted that if called upon to settle their obligations at this time, sixty per cent of the 43 sugar factories in this country would have to shut down. Charging thnt the Cuban sugar pro ducers were responsible for the de bauch of high prices last year, Mr. McCormick declared that by their "inordinate greed" at that time they had "pulled their house down upon themselves and now they are asking the American congress to ' extricate them from the debris." The witness exclaimed that at the time when the Cuban producers were getting prices "beyond their wildest dreams" Amorican beet sugar produc ers were compelled to keep their prices down by reason of the food con trol law and rulings of the depart ment of justice. 17 Below in Montana.
