Outside of Salem and Cottage drove Ashland is tho only town in the state which maintains a practice lions.. under the Smith-Hughes rystem. This is a neat cottage, up-to-date in its ap pointments, located on the Houlevard. and is occupied by four teachers. Hiffh school girls in domestic science training, manage this model home weekly in rotation. The "practice house" is what. its name, implies, and that is teaching high school girls a fixed routine In housekeeping, put ting into practice the theories learned in the classroom. The daily allow ance for food, including luncheon and dinner is for the seven guests ;t the table, on the basis of sixteen cents per single meal. . There are exceptions to this rule, however, when the over head charge is expanded. On a re cent occasion a reporter, great ly in terested in the workings of the Smith llughes net (although the names of Mrown-.Iones are equally as attrac tive), was a specially invited guest at a four o'clock dinner prepared under practice house auspices. He devoured everything in sight, with the result that average schedules as applying to food cost and service were demoral ized and if these visitations are re peated the school board will have to add a one-eighth mill increase to '.-ud-get estimates, there having been no pro vision made for carrying a peak load of expense on entertainment ac count. At the high school cooking classes, fifty girls are enrolled, also a like number in the sewing classes, and fully half of the total hundred in at tendance partake of their noonday meal In this department, served cafe teria style, the various dishes averag ing t hree or four cents each. Inci dental to this domestic science ser vice, the girls thus employed visit the bakeries, markets ice plant and creamery while those engaged in sew ing classes an; required to net to ex hibits on display in shop windows, not overlooking apparel worn by suitably dressed individuals. "Work on the home-making classes will be inspected here on December 1. by E. H. Klliott, director for the state board at Salem, and Miss Hertha Davis, state supervisor at Corvallis, when a special meeting will be held b the Parent-Teacher association at the junior high school.
