t,? L AJ PTY-TAU TO PEOPLE aON THE CKOwn- l-ic-., .... ' E --v. do V cd but we re: i MOT IN I ROME- IE TRAY TO DEATH' HAVVIiAN BELIEF IIOXOLl'Ir, Nov. 5. (liy Mail.) The ancient Hawaiian belief that a person can he "prayed to death" if the "Kahuna" or medicine man has something in his ilossession tljat once belonged to the patient, still lives, it was revealed here when Moke Kaiawe was arrested on a charge of "anaana" meaning an attempt to. "pray to death." , The complaint against KaiiiVe, said to ho one of the hest known "medicine men" in the Hawaiian islands" ''and credited with having accomplished some remarkable chugs, was made by Sirs. Frank Kalua, wife of a territorial land office clerk. .Mrs. Kalua, according to her hus band, was taken ill about a month ago. She refused to be treated by a licensed physician and placed herself under Kaiaye's care, he paid. She seemed t.i recover until Kaiawe is. said to have cut off some of her hair, when she be came seriously ill. Mrs, Kalua, fright ened, wailed anxiously for Kuiawe an.l when ho failed to appear on his week ly calling day, she went to a hospital, where it ifcas necessary to perform an operation. She is recovering. The warrant and Kaiawe's arrest followed. Much interest is being dis played in bis coming trial, the first in the territory in years on charge of "anaana."
