This statement in a Los Angeles paper, by a friend of the corpulent
comedian, is a typical example of the prevailing sentiment in circles
close to the primrose path of movie land. The trial is reiardcd as a
joke. Fatty will be acquitted, and then he will come back.
The facts of the case are probably accurate, and there is little
doubt that the indictment of manslaughter will never stand. Hut
Fatty's roming back is entirely another question.
For in his return, not the moral standards of movieland, but of the
public, will be the determining factor, and the public, particularly
the movie public, is singularly old-fashioned.
The attorneys for Arbucklc will undoubtedly tear to shreds the
sentimental picture of outraged innocence. Fatty's rob; as a Satyr,
will in- nil likelihood never be sustained, but Miss Kappe's character
can't disappear, without Fatty's character going down some distance
with it, nor can he escape a sprinkling of tbe muck that promises to
smother his associates.
Therefore the come-back part of the performance is decidedly
doubtful. The Anglo Saxon tradition that comedy somehow must he
guileless, that laughter can't survive an athmosphcre of taint, may be
old fashioned, but it still endures.
Fatty might continue his golden harvest in some of the Latin coun
tries, or along the original Barbary const, but the American people
still demand in their public favorites, on the stage or off, a certain ro
manlic halo. It need not be in fact, but it must he allowed in imaui
i t ion. They don't ask questions, but when evidence to the contrary
i. thrown at them, the goose that laid the golden egg. is dead.
