Go to Church. What Would the
Country Be Without Its Churches?
If you are an unbeliever and don't GO TO tuiIRCft, don't be a
scoffer at religion.
While the GO TO CHUrtCH movement has been sweeping the
country like a prairie fire, there are found In every community men
who seek to belittle it, To these men a special appeal here is made.
What would the country be without Its churches?. What would It be
without religion? Just ponder for a minute. There would be an
era of lawnessness and crime that would bo awful to contemplate.
Even unbelievers will admit that the churches benefit a com
munity. Of course there may be some people who GO TO CHURCH
lust for the appearance Of things. But happily there are thousands
who are sincere In their religious belief and their worship of God.
These people help to make this glorious country what it is.
StatlBticB show that there Is a MINIMUM OP CRIME in communities
where there are plenty of churches. The most hardened criminal has
been reached by ah appeal to his BETTER NATURE, by an appeal to
bis belief in a Supreme Being.

HIM RIGHTEOUS. IT WILL MAKE HIM A BETTER CITIZEN.
' It Is hot enough that you GO TO CHURCH. . Be prepared to
answer the scoffer. Don't give him any peace. Try to show him
where he Is wrong. Everybody can do a little for the GO TO
CHURCH movement. Are you doing it?
It is not enough that you '00 TO CHURCH.

J. A. Perry, president of the Medford
Irrigation district yesterday decided
to secure a consulting engineer to
take the place of D. C. Henny, who re
signed October 13th, sending the fol
lowing letter to State Engineer Cup
per: Dear Sir: On the ltfth of October
Mr. Hehny, as you know, telegraphed
the Board of Directors of the -Medford
Irrigation district resigning as
consulting engineer. The board did
not take any action in the matter at
the time hoping that when Mr. Henny
returned to his office and found that
the board had appointed an engineer
the day before he wired, that he
might be willing to reconsider and not
resign. '
But on his return we received a
letter from him confirming his wire
of the 13th Inst., resigning as con
sulting engineer. '
The Board of Directors of the Med
ford Irrigation district would like
to get in touch with some competent
engineer, to act as consulting engi
neer for the district and if you can
recommend some one whom you feel
Is qualified to fill the place we would
appreciate It.
The work seoms to be progressing
very well under the plans approved
by Mr. Henny and yourself, but we
would like to have a competent en
gineer to consult with Mr. Cowgill
in case there should be anything
come up that required it. .-- '
Yours truly, ' . i:
J. A. PERRY, . i
President Board of Directors Med
Iford Irrigation District.
"Whether or not water can be se
cured next year depends upon the
weather entirely," says District En
gineer Cowgill who returned from a
trip to the lake yesterday. "If wo
have a long spell of good working
weather, water will be on the land in
1922, if we don't, It won't. More Im
portant than when wo get water Is
fo get tho water right, that Is to
have a safe dam and safe and perma
nent system. The latter phase of the
problem is the one I am Insisting
upon now." , .
. PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 26. Award
of Contracts for 43.9 miles of road
work, 6.9 of which will be hard
surface, contracts for more than $400,-
000 in bridge work, and the award of a
$1,600,000 issue of highway bonds to
Ralph Schneeloch company at a higher
premium than had been received here
tofore, were outstanding features of
yesterday's meeting of tho state high-'
way commission.
The meeting continued today with
opening or bids on 78 miles of road
work and reception of petitions and
applications from representatives of
all parts of the state who have pro
jects they wi3h Included in the road
program for tho coming season.
Bituminous paving ran cheaper than
concrete In cases where alternative
bids were made by Oregon contractors
but in the t:ds filed by Washington
firms the concrete was lower.
The letting of the road contracts at
this time, were announced some time
ago as an effort on the. part of the
highway commission to help meet the
impending unemployment situation.
