There are many other weighty ls bucs and all the candidates may not admit that the fare problem Is upper most, but it is tha subject most talked about Just now. As several millions of persons have to travel to and from work each day on the subway, elevated or surface linos, the fare question hits i the pocketbook and accounts for the pen eral interest. Mayor John F. Hylan, who is seek ing re-election on the Tammany ticket long ago proclaimed himself the original champion of the five-cent fare. He fought attempts of the va rious companies to raise tho fare In war days and carried his fight to the legislature. ills opponents, however, have not been lacking in political capacity, and they too, have pledged themselves to a nickel fare. Hut tho mayor's sup porters claimed the enemy stole his thunder and have charged that the promlsea of some of the candidates havo been made for campaign pur poses only. Major Henry H. Curran, tho repub-Ucan-coalitiion candidate, favors tho nickel faro and has endorsed, In tho main, tho' principal features of the transit commission's findings. Hut the mayor's admirers charge that Major Curran represents tho "traction crowd" and that If ho becomes may or, tho faro will be increased. Major Curran denied ho represented any one and said he .would stand by his pledges, If elected. As a corrollary to the faro issue, the question' of "homo rule" is Involved. Mayor Hylan has claimed that tho city should run its own affairs, that tho farmers In the legislature do not know the needs of tho bustling metro polis. Ho has chafed at tho charter restrictions imposed by the legislature and his appeal for genuine home rule has been echoed by the tammany or ganizaation. But Major Curran, too, has como out for homo rule by the city. Tha other Issues havo been develop ed to some extent by the findings of tho legislataive committee, headed by Senator Schuyler M. Meyer, which was named to lnvostlgato the Hylan ad ministration. Tho mayor's friends have claimed this committee was ap minted "to get something on Hylan" a chargo which was emphatically de- niod. Although tho principal officers of tho city havo been called upon' to testify before the committee, and some testimony has1 been adduced, tending to show-lrrogularlty in the police, dock and market departments, no Indictments have beon asked. Ma jor Curran, who has long been con nected with tho city government in various capacities, has claimed that Mayor Hylan's administration ' has been Inefficient, that the vast prob lems involved were too weighty for a short sighted administration" to handle. Ho has pointed out that the running expenses of New York amount to nearly ;a million dollars a day and that tho business of being mnyor simply means the immediate application of business methods, with a regard to planning for future growth and development. Major Curran has pjeadpd for more schools pointing out that thousands of pupils are on part time and has called for business meth ods in handling tho housing problem. Tho five other candldataes have so far taken but littlo active part in tho campaign discussions. The socialists, however, through their mayornllty candidate, Magistrate Jacob Pankcn, havo como out for a five-cent fare.
