Mayor Gates has Issued a proclama
tion setting aside Sunday, Oct. 30 as
"Go to Church Sunday," giving, the
official sanction to, the observance of
the day. The mayor of Portland did
the' same thing in the observance of
the "Go to Church" campaign recently
put on In that city. The churches are
planning fur special services and for
large crowds, and every family Is urg
ed to attend some church in a body..

gave a feeble wag of his tail, and
dozed on, showing that he is a night
police dog by bis all day sleeping.
Alex la gun shy and is in course of
training. The report of a gun fired
near him finds, him in another state a
half hour afterwards. Vet his owner

A budget of $54,560 for the coming
year has been approved by the city
council of Grants Pass. The present
tax levy of 22 mills was also raised 1
mill. Purchase ot a new chemical
truck and the upkeep ot parks are hed
responsible for the increase of the tax
levy. A special election will be held
November 17 to provide for the paving
of about half a mile of the Pacific high
way, lying within the city limits. Un
less tho people of the city authorize
the project a gap in the highway will
remain. .

Davis and Joe Hlbbard, the grocer and I
tlie latter's son have returned .from
their over a week's hunting trip in
the Elk creek-Flat creek country
towards the Umpqua divide without
having bagged a single deer, which Is
a novel experience for Mr. Davis as
during his sixteen years of deer hunt-
ing he has always heretofore obtained
close to the limit. The party certainly
had tough luck as it took two days to
pack Into the region, and then It
rained hard almost every day they
were there. At that they saw lots of
deer In the distance,, but too far away
to get a shot at, and none close by.
