IT HAS been (leeiilcd .that French and EntrliKh shull huvo equal
recognition as official languages nt tho arms parley. Secretary
Hughes has so informed Briand and the other governmental heads.
Tho announcement lias caused great pleasure' iii France. The
French were hurt at the suggestion made some time ago that English
.".lone would have official sanction when French has been the ac
cepted tongue of diplomacy for centuries.
There is little doubt that from now on English will hold equal
place with French wherever internationiil discussions are carried on,
but whether, it will ever entirely supersede French is not at all cer
English has made great strides in Europe during and since the war
and most of the other nations, with their usual shrewdness, will
doubtless cultivate it as a secondary tongue. If Americans are wise,
they, in their turn, will take up the study of French extensively, not
only as a social accomplishment, but as a business and professional
i.sset. Spanish, -too, if possible but French is more broadly useful.
BRITAIN'S BOXER INDEMNITY.
f ,
GHEAT ISIUTAIX seems about to follow the example of the Lull
ed States in remitting the unpaid balance of the Chinese Uoxer
indemnity, with the stipulation that the money be used in Chimfse
cducution. , ,'
The United States, at the suggestion of Secretary John Hy, flicl
Unit very thing more than 20 years ago. Since that time many of
China's finest young men have studied at schools and universities in
this country, learning not only American ways and methods, along
vilh their academic or technical studies, but what is more important
ilill, America's ideals and America's honest desire for good " 'will
niiKuig nations. The original step was not a selfish one, not taken with
a view to courting special privilege or preference in China. Yet it
has brought,, material benefits in addition to making China a warm
friend.
That is why a special parliamentary commission studying the sit
uation for Great Jtritain has reported, "American, interests in China'
arc advanced by tlic respect, .trust and affection of the Chinese to a
degree. Unit no other natioir enjoys." It is an interesting comment o:i
a good deed done and a good example set.

PLEASANT READING. .
KATKI) by my flaring candle, I digest the daily news,. and it

Foolishly 1 keep inquiring, "Is the whole world staring mad ?
Aren't people ever tiring of the grewsome and the badi Oh, this
era of abasement I All our bulwarks seem to wreck,!" and some
buckshot , through the easement, comes and hits me in "the neck.
All the boys arc busy gunning, and they care not who. they plug,
and the cops are tired of running grisly slayers to the jug. With
my humble rushlight burning, I peruse the tales of crime', longing
for the swift returning of, the olden, peaceful time; when in safety
one might travel up the highway, far and near, and no shotgun
charged with gravel, with his jaunt would interfere. Motor haul
dils were unheard of in those days serene and bright; it was sel
dom we. had word of gunmen who would shoot at sight. In the
streets, where men assemble. I'm the victim of a scare, and at
home I sweat and tremble lest the gunmen find me there; on re
tiring 1 am fearful that they'll slay me while I snooze and on vk-.
ing 1 am tearful, lest I perish in my shoes. For the boys are hits'
slaying and the bullets whiz and whine; oh, that all of us were
uuiying as in days of auhl lang syne!

When I was a boy in Ohio I earn
ed niy first dollar. I ran nway from
home to come1 to Oregon and was
going to peddle my way here. I had
Cifty' cents. I bought four pair of
nickel socks and some susnenders,
and started out. I doubled my money
on the transaction. I stocked up
again and started out anew, but grew
homesick in a couple of day, and
went back home at Troy, Ohio, to
get something to eat, and start right
for Oregon. I started out with my
Sunday clothes under my arm, -and
when a mile or two from home, took
off my - every day clothes and hid
them. I was never able to find them
again. I was warmly welcomed on
my return. I really think that most
of tho rheumatism I have every win

it." .
