HILL, OCT. 18 Walter Miller, middleweight wres tling champion and wrestling Instruc tor at the I-os Angeles Athletic club, will meet Ralph Hand, champion of southern Oregon at Gold Hill, Friday, October 18th, in what promises to be the most thrilling athletic contest in the history of this section. Miller hs thrown Thye twice at Los Angeles within the last year and Is a star of the mat, who has met and thrown some of the best wrestlers in the country. Hand is now training under tho di rection of Ted Thye at the M. A. A. C. In Portland, and has been loamlng all ti.e tricks of tho game in his six weeks tutelage. Thye believes that with the rough edges knocked off Hand will be a strong contender for the champion ship, and that he has a good chance with Miller off his home ground. Thye claims It is hard to beat Miller in Ixs Angeles, just like It is hard to beat nand in Gold Hill. Tho Miller-Hand match ought to draw the largest crowd in the annals of southern Oregon sport events. It will be staged at Gold Hill under the auspices of the Gold Hill boxing commission. A short bus iness session was held In which Mrs. Brashear was selected president. Be fore leaving the hostess served each a generous and refreshing slice of watermelon. Those present were: Mrs. Brashear, Carstens, DeBols, Freed, Florton, MacFaren, Martin, Mansfield, Marquis Maclaren, S. San dry, Wilson and Mcilvain. Roguo River high school boys are victors once more, having beaten Cen tral Point five to nothing in a soc cer game last Friday afternoon. 'Mr. Sam Uybonsky of Merrill, Ore., has como to Rogue River to live and is opening up his business as shoe maker next door to tho harbor shop. The Prosbytery of Southern Oregon meets In Roguo River nex week. Rev. Mr. Warrington of Roseburg will preach tho opening sermon on Tues day evening. He has tho contract to pack tho apples on tho Tronsou and Edgell orchards, and com menced to work Monday morning tho 3rd, and from what I can lean! of his plans intends to put on quite a forco and push tho job through as fast as possible I have not hoard of the prospects on tho Tronson orchard but met Mr. Fdgell a day or so ago and ho roports thnt tho prospocts for a crop aare considerably better than they wore last year, and Inst year ho had a fine crop and they wero of a fine vari ety, largo nnd luscious. F. C. Hell, tho present owner of the Butte Creek (the old Corbln) orchard reports that he has a flno crop of ap ples again this season and commenced to pick and pack the latter part of last week, and from what I can learn the prospect is very good for as good, if not bettor crop ns we have over had In this liutto 'Crook country, and whore thero Is water to irrigate the trees it is almost a certainty to havo a good crop, although once In a great while tho lato frosts damage the fruit to a greater or less extent. Thoro is a considerable quantity of lumber, shakes and fenco posts being brought out of tho hills Just now by team and trucks as tho parties who have boon bringing out such things on tho railroad track havo discontinued that line of business for some reason. I mot Vorna Mathews 'a day or so ago and ho said that ho was hauling out his lumber to put up a large barn, with teams. It seems so slow a pro cess to go nearly twenty miles to a mill, nnd that laying right on tho P. & E. railroad, when it could ho dono witli trucks or on tho railroad so much easier, but such is life in tho far west when a few men control tho business affairs. I met J. Wattenberg tho other day and he told me that he had rented the farm known as the T. K. Ruth place lying along tho bnnks of Rogue river some six miles above here. Mr. Wat-i tenborg is fortunate in securing such a j valuable place for It Is not only goodj land but a good part of it is set In alfalfa and they havo recently opened up a ditch bringing water from Rogue river so as to irrigate almost the entire place. Carl Ahlstrom of Butte Falls, waa one of the passengers on the Butte Falls stage last Friday on his way home and he attracted my attention more particularly on account of his having strips of adhesive plaster across his nose and my curiosity led i mo to inquire the cause of his trouble and he said that he had It broke play ing football. Among the city dads and the lady members of the town council there J have been some very material 1m ; provements made in the streets of our town, between the private citizens and the county they have succeeded in making Riverside Boulevard one of the finest streets in the town and the county has had the county road com mencing at tho railroad track and run ning in a westerly direction to Inter sect the Crater Lake highway covered with a good supply of crushed rock, rolled and well watered so that those who wish to go either way can have a good road to drive on, and in addition to that the town is having a lot of sand and gravel dumped Into some of the holes that have been worn In our streets, and had a new cross walk put at the intersection of Rogue River avenue with Main street and on the county road on the Sunnyside of Butte creek private enterprise has put a fine lot of sand and gravel all along from the county bridge to the corner of Lot 1, Block 1, D. & E. addition, facing the Sunnyside hotel. . Rev. Geo. N. Edwards, field worker for Washington, Oregon and Idaho for the Congregational church will hold services In the Antloch school house on Sunday, Oct. 9th, at 10:30 Sunday moraine and at Brownsboro at 3 o'clock in the afternoon and at Eagle Point at 7:30 p. m. Everybody is in vited to attend and hear him. Pete Young was a business caller last Friday. He is generally too busy to take time to visit our town but has to come in occasionally to have black smithing done, as he has a good farm to care for and that keeps him busy. Mrs. Chas. Ray, Mabel Ray and Mr. J. F. Mundy of Medford, were here for dinner Friday;. Orbie Abbott of Butte Falls was a passenger on the stage for Butte Falls Friday, and Frank Miller, formerly of the Luko Creek country but now of eastern Oregon, and Thos. F. Nichols were here for dinner. Frank Courtney and his brother Sam are at this writing repairing the dam age dono by the fire at tho Nichols store. ; ' ' Mrs. Cummings of Central Point, was here looking after her property nnd while here rented it to O. M. Goss. Thero was a big truck load of furni ture and general supplies went thru Here for the citizens of Bute Falls. The furniture was for M. C. Mahonoy. Among the callers Saturday were Frank Miller, 'Ralph Beibersteadt, John Miller and' wife and Mrs. Mar garet Brown, Mrs. Miller's sister of Portland, Thomas Sworn, Mr. nnd Mrs. G .A. Codding, doputy district attorney wero here and were on tho ' stages, Mr. Miller and family for their home at Lalio Creek, and Mr. and Mrs. Cod ding and Mr. Swem were on their way to Butto Falls. 1 G. W. Van Dyke of Lake Creek, has taken over the job, not tho contract, of carrying tho mall from here to Lake Creek from Mr. Statib of Brownsboro, tho contractor. Cliff Hlckson nnd wifo have moved into tho F. J. Ayers houso on Riverside Boulevard. Win. Butler has started up his wood saw and is sawing tip the wood for the pooplo in town who havo such work to do.
