OLD FRIKNDS drop in from time to time and to stale his tories fjive tongue, and talk about the far-off clime wherein we dwelled when we were younj;. It always shocks me when I meet some friend I knew in clays gone by, who used to walk on buoyant feet, and who was eager, strong and spry. For we re member old time friends as we last saw them, years ago, forget ting how time's passage lends to ruddy loeks the sheen of snow. Just" yesterday James Foster 1'rigg fame feebly hobbling to my. lair; onee he was strong and hold and big, and fit to whip a griz zly bear. And he excelled in manly games, untired he roamed the woodland ways; and thus I always thought of James, the hero of my younger days. And now he's bent and weak and ill, his voice n cackle, shrill and drear, and when he has to climb a hill he always shifts to second gear. I showed amazement as I stood and watched him creaking to my door; was this the hero who withstood the grcenaward champions of yore? "Great Scott," he cried, "can this be you, who onee was pleasing to the sight? And now your girth obstructs the view, your piebald whisker?, are a sight." We waked old memories that slept, and drngyed them forth at bitter cost ; and as we talked we sighed and wept, each found the other such a frost. Editorial Correspondence SALEM After talking over the irrigation situation with State ' Engi neer Cupper, Consulting Engineer J-lenny and J. A. Perry, president of the. Medford Irrigation district, one reaches the eonelUKiun that there is general agreement and every prom iso that water will be secured In 1922 and secured with the Intei-entH -of the properly owners fully protected. Cupper will leave Sun day for Medford and will make a thorough investigation ot the present situation, tie has asked Mr. Henny to accompany him, but the latter has to leave for tile east on an import ant government mission, and prob ably will be unable to mako the (lip. He will probably continue as con sulting engineer, however, and being very much Interesled In the success of the project, the dlslrlet will con tinue to liavo (he benefit of his great experience and expert knowledge. After Mr. Cupper's investigation it will bo decided whether or not a Hpcciul outside engineer will be chosen to take Mr. ltea's place or whether in the Interest of economy tho present force of engineers under the district will bo sufficient. Messrs. Cupper and Henny nre agreed that .the only feasible course now Is to forget recent dissensions and get together on a program ot pushing tho work to a successful conclusion. Today the state securi ties board met with Mr. l'eny and E. UM. Wilson, the district secretary, and went over tile entire situation. Mr. ttoss, the construction accountant, who filed a report criticising certain features of tho district's system of ac counting had a frank and friendly talk and all their differences were ironed out and adjusted. The main difficulty seems to have been that .Mr. Wilson was not in Medford at the time of Mr. Itoss' visit and there fore, certain matters could not be ex plained and a certain amount of fric tion resulted. When nil tho cards were placed on tho table, however, (he securities board consisting of the state engineer,, state bank examiner and' attorney general, decided that af fairs in tho Medford district were such that the stato was justified in paying the interest charges as re quested.
