Over a million men have boon idle for three months, the eoal in c'uslry in England has been ilealt a blow from which it can not recover in cars, the total cost to the people runs into the liumlreds of mil lions and yet the men, according to press reports, return on practi cally the same basis, that they entered the conflict. The result is a disastrous defeat for Kritish labor. While the jjov eminent iillnws ii generous subsidy, this was offered two months nan and refused because at that time, a labor government in Knjiland. control iif industry by the workers, and a wai;e pool for the miners were nil in contcmphil ion. The first rift in the lute was the defection of railroad and dock workers, the inability of 'orsauized labor to hohlrtoui t Iter. The miners refused to rend the writing on the wall, however, and con tinued their hopeless stru-rle. Now they .vivo in, with nothing gained, and for the time at lcasti cvervthinir lost. ' No one iniestions that the miners hail a grievance, that reforms were needed and must ultimately be instituted, but as one views the 'ruin left in the wake of this strike, answer is "Does 'it 'pay? ' (,'nn if pay!" Hasn't the time come when modern civilization if it is to endure must eliminate not only war be tween nations, but war between classes within a nation. Labor gained nothing in this eoal strike that couldn't have been' ((allied by a "talk around a table," and the people of Kiiidiuitt will be paying; fhe cost for another decade. A few more such experiences and. Knj;land will outlaw strikes in vital public industries, as Kau nas has done. Wslt UNLUCKY DAYS. A meeting of the various committees on the Jackson county parade and cele bration at Ashland on July 1 was held last night at tho Hotel Austin. Mis. l.oomls, chiiiraian of the ways and moans committee made an inter esting report of her visit to various communities in the county. She was cordially recelvoil everywhere, and round that the interest in the event was general throughout the county. The biggest feature of the meeting was the action taken In the matter of precedence In tho parade. Jacksonville being the oldest city In I he county was given the honor of leading the parade, while Ashland to show her liberal spirit and hroaduilndeduess voluntar ily took last place. Miss llrltl, the sister ef the mayor of Jacksonville, was chosen lo lake the, part of the (loddess of Liberty in the IV A. It. limit which will head tho niaicli. Medfonl is to lie second, followed by Phoenix. Talent, Central Point. F.aglo Point, (iidd Hill and llogue Diver In the order named. The fart that Ash land unanimously voted herself Inlo last position Is an evidence that the old rivalry which wan said to exist be tween her ami Medfonl Is gone and forgotten. , It developed at the meeting that some big surprises are In store from several cities in Jackson county whicn will have places in the parade. Much mystery surrounds the features they will contribute, and from the careful manner in which details aro being con cealed from the public, II seems that competition for the cash prt'.cs Is go ing to he very keen. air. Slagel ol Talent Is going to bring a number of cowboys who will take part in the parade. ' 11 was decided to havn the parade start at 10 o'clock. Kach feature In tho parade Will hear a number lo en able the Judges to nake their decis ions nnd award the prizes without con fusion. The judges' stand will be on the balcony of the Hotel Austin. Tho parado will start on the boule vard at, tho library and proceed to lOnst Mala street to the Plaza, thence on North Main street to Mechanic, Ihenre eastward ,on Mechanic to Hoi man, thence 'south' on'Vlelimtn to 'Its Intersection with North Main street where it will disband. Tho wrestling match will take placb at 2 o'clock. Flowers will be thrown from the air plane upon tho parade while, it is mov ing through tho streets. ' llelween 1 and 2 o'clock free-for-all sprints will be held in the park, nud cash prl cs given to tho winners. From 2:30 to H:3I) n:ul 7, to K:30 the band will give a concort in Llthla park, and at 9 o'clock I ho b'K fire-, works display will t'ako place Dancing will wind lip the most spec tacular ovont that ever took place In Ashland. . , An official program will be distrib uted free to everybody on tho morning of tho parado.
