SOMK !(Hi peofrle, very jfoort ieci, vie-,v this iinpemliiit; Deiuisey-Ciiriieiitier ent;aj.'i iiii'iil with mi iiiiuizcd disjiiist. How iiny civilized jh-i-siui could pay In see two (Mi-ujjIii'S maul each other, before a mob of noisy I lonliiins, is beyond their powers of comprehension. Brutality, nn incitement of Hie lower nniinn pas sions, cheap notoriety and sordid yrecd, are all Ihey can discern in this dramatic spectacle soon to be staged in Jersey (,'ity. There is considerable to sustain this viewpoint and yet it doesn't explain the fact that thousands of average human beinjrs, decently respected in their various communities, coiniiifr from all parts of the world, are to view this contest, that more newspaper correspondents, than gathered in 1'aris during the war, will be in Jersey City, and that in every city mid town, in every civilized nation, crowds will jiitlu.-r before the newspaper hulk-tins on July 2nd, to get the news us it is flashed round by round. There must be something in this international fistin contest that .!irs deep instincts in human nature, thai appeals to something more fundamental and less primitive than the mere exchange of blows be tween two pugilistic gladiators. Olhcrwise the public reaction would not be so intense or so overwhelming. And there is. For this contest, between the champion of America end the champion of France is essentially concentrated drama. It ap peals not, only ns the' gladiatorial combats appealed with tragedy re moved, but as the (Greek drama and the problem play. As Mr. "Wells has shown in his history, the development of the human race, in the last 10(11) years is but the wink of an eyelash ns compared with the aeons that preceded, and our emergence from the .jungle, was only the day before yesterday, when a perspective from t ho dawn of life is secured. So even the charge of anachronism falls flat. l'erhaps the point could best he illustrated by Jiernard Shaw's description of the Carpcntier-Heckett engagement. .Now 3,1 r. Shaw is an esthete and an artist. He detests anything that is raw, he it literature or meat. And yet this ring battle thrilled the great Irish tu'iimatist as follows: The change In Carpcntler's faco when he Rets In work Ik rn KtarilinK that the sini-tHtm-rf can ice m-lhing cU. The unmistak able (Jreck'llre digs a wench tktokh his forehead at onre: his color changes to a siony gray: h-. lookn ten thouKand years old; his eyes !M-e through stone walls; and his expi'exion of intensely concentrated will friglm-iiK every one in Uie h.ill. except his oiion lit, who is far loo busy to attend to ui-h i-uriorilli-s. There was no fight. There was only n stii.crl) exhibition epar. with Uei kett as what used io he called a chopping block. For a few moments ho wisely stuck dose to his man:' but .Mr. Angle gave the order (I did not hear it but wns ti Id of it) to break away; and Hcclt ett then li t the Frenchman get clear und faced him for outfight fighting. From that i::oinent he was lost. I'arpentler simply did the classic thing; the long shot with the left: the liad-olf and get away. The measurement of distance and such distance: was ex act to an inch, the spied dazzling, the Imparl like the kick of a thoroughbred horse. Ilei kitt, except for one amazed lionlike shake of the head, took it like a stone wali; but he was helpless: he had mi lime to move a finger before t'arpcnlier was back out of his reach, lie was utterly oiits, eedcd. Three times Carpeniler did tills, each hit more brilliant, if possible, than the last. Ileckett was for u moment dazed by the astonishing success of the altuck and In that moment t'nric nllcr sent in a splendidly clean and finished right to the jaw. It Is not often that perfect luck intends perfect styli in this wirtld: but Carpeniler seemed c.hle to command vi-n luck. The blow found that mysterious spot Hint is In all our Jaws, and that is so seldom found by the fist. There was no mistaking the droop with which Heckett went prone to the boards.
