The first formal meeting of the coiii

of July celebration parade waa held
)UBt night at the Austin hotel, Ash
land. The meeting was lartcely at

The various committees all report
ed that keen interest was being shown
by- every community in the- county
and the many novel and original fea
tures that are to be a part of the pa
rade will make it even larger and
more elaborate than was thought ion

Mayor Gates -appointed the follow
: tng ladies as a committee to act for
Medford: Mrs.' A.. J. . Hanby, Mrs.
Leonard Carpenter, Mrs; ' James W.
Owens and Mrs."F..E. Merrick.
Fred ' C Homes was chosen as
marshal , of the . day and will have
full charge of the parade.
J. J. Murphy will be in charge of
the horseback riders division, . the
staff for the other division to be
named later by Marshal 'Homes. .
- Many Bunds In l'uriulc.
A special feature will be that of
- having a number of bands in the pa
rade. Frank Jordan was chosen as
chairman of the committee, having
charge of this division. It is probable
that there-will be. a band from every
city arid.Uown in ..the., county .among
them being the Cold Jllll 1-adles'
hand. A cash prize of G0 will be
given ,to. the blind presenting the
snappiest appearance and playing the
snappiest tunes.
An additional appropriation of J2G0
will be made-by the-Ashland chamber
of M:ommei-ce-"to be used by the pa-
rude committees. -. -
One feature of- the parade will -be
the "yol( leaders.' They will make the
necessary noise to take the place of
fire crackers. :'
Dr. fleo. O; Jarvis was put In charge
- of the welfare work, and will see to
tt that all necessary facilities are pro
vided for the comfort of mothers and
children. The part that children will
take. In the purade will ho in charge
of J. . P. Bees6n and Mrs. Homewood.
I It 'was announced that In the sec
tion' devoted to industrial and busi
ness .floats the names of no firms or
their products will be-permitted, in
this section at least fourteen different
concerns have promised to have floats
A prize of $5 will be given to the
best display and 1 10 to the second.
The poultrymen of the county have
promised to have an especially fine
float, in the' parade. - .,

The ways, means and plan commit
tee was requested to visit the tourists'
camping grounds and have the tour
ists Join together and supply a fea
ture for the parade.
A prize of iii will be given for the
best stunt, and two prizes. $15 for
the bebt and $10 for hte second, to the
best and second best individual fea
tures. For the best decorated building In
the city on the fourth u cash prize
of $25 will be paid.
The most original of all the fea
tures In the parade will win a cash
prize of $100, the second best $50. and
the third $25.
Twenty-five dollars In- cosh will he
paid to the city or town having the
largest percentage of its population
marching in the parade, Ashland not
being allowed to compete for this
prize.
The total of the cash prizes so far
offered is $325.
No Profiteering.
Mr. 'Winburn made a very favorable
Impression by emphasizing the fact
that no profiteering by any one con
nected with the parade would bo tol
erated. Everybody was earnestly
asked to contribute his or her lime
without pay, and merchants were
nsked to sell the necessary supplies
for the floats at cost. Workingmen
were requested to donate their serv
ices free In constructing the llotts and
doing other necessary work for the
parade.
This was the biggest feature of the
meeting. no profiteering. The sin
cere desire Is to leave the Impression
among all visitors that Ashland thinks
more of patriotism than II does of
profits.

chairman of the ways, means and
plan committee.

the delegates was Clarence T. Coley of
New York, manager of the Equitable
building. Other delegates were here

PORTLAND, Ore., June 21 Rural
social problems were discuss! today
at the session of the Oregon social
worlters convention here. Earl Kil-
Patrick, director of extension of the
University of Oregon, presided. Ray
E. Carter, northwestern district repre
sentative of community service spoke
on "the community's responsibility to
itself." The convention will close to
night with election' of officers and a
banquet.
PORTLAND, Ore., June 21. Ap
pointment of William A. Schimpft of
Astoria to be sales manager of the
Pacific Cranberry exchange was an
nounced toduy. Practically nil the
cranberries grown on the Pacific coast
are sold through the exchange, which
Is composed of growers operating in
Oregon and Washington, In the dis
trict surrounding the mouth of the
Columbia river. A heavy crop is In
prosiiect for this year, reports from
growers say. -

Only 107 voles were cast In the Med.
ford school district election Monday,
which was in marked contrast to the
run of over 800 votes cast at the an
nual election last year. The election
was to choose two directors for three
year terms on the school board.
The two regularly nominated candi
dates, John C. Mann and A. B. Cun
ningham, well known business men,
were practically unanimously elected,
the former receiving 102 votes and the
latter 100 votes. Four other men were
voted for, their names being written
in on the ballot, O. C. Hoggs receiving
two votes, and John Carkin, O. F.
Talner and C. M. Houston each get
ting one vote.
The lack of interest felt, in the elec
tion and the light vote is regarded as
rather a compliment to the present
board as indicating general satisfac
tion with its administration of the
past year, when Mr. Mann served ns
president of the board, he having been
appointed to serve out the unexpired
term of J. W. Wakefield, resigned.
Mr. Cunningham will succeed Joseph
O. Grey on the board, the tatter's term
having expired.
The record breaking vote of the
school election last year was due to
the lack of harmony in the schools the
previous year and lack of sympathy at
a large portion of the school patrons
with the school administration. The
past year has seen ha,rmony restored
in Medford's school system.
The new board will meet for re
organization early In July.
