Ring Sketches of
Bygone Years
Three years after l!ob Pilzsiuiniolts
lost the heiivyweight crown to .lames
.1. Jeffries, lie tried to ket it back and
failed. Jeffries knocked hini out in
less time titan on their first meeting.
The second encounter was at Kan
Frnncisco July 25, 11)02 and in tho
eighth round It ended In victory for
the champion. Their first fight last
ed eleven rounds.
The sport critics said Fitzsilumons
outboxed Jeffries at every point. Hut
Jeffries, had about tho same capacity
for punishment us Clui-.-tntua hud for
feud, and besides, he bad a trciilen
dolis advantage in weight.
Fll'slmnlons weighed lC!i pounds,
while the r-hnmplon from California
entered with 220 pounds to back up
bis blows.
FitKHimiiio.nH fought a heroic fight
and danced about the heavy-swinging
Jeffries and sent home many a hard
bitting ffst. The force of these was
impotent against the gt-et bulk of the
champion, however. In the moment
Jeffries sent a hard left hand smash
to the jaw and followed it up with
another left to tho stomach that
knocked his lighter, opponent to the
flour. Filzsimmons tried to rise, but
sank down and was counted out.
