SITE, UNION CREEK
.; Word has just been received from
the forest department by Scoutmaster
Millard that a camp ground site at
Union Creek had been granted for the
Boy Scouts of southern Oregon. Mr.
Millard, the local scoutmaster and Mr.
Rankin, representing the forest de
partment will make a trip to Union
creek at once and select the Bite. The
grounds will comprise quite a number
of 'acres and will be beautified by the
scouts this summer. The plan Is to
erect a log lodge with athletic field,
swimming pool, rustic bridges, etc. It
Is hoiied that In a few years this camp
will be one of the main attractions for
tourists on the road to Crater Lake.
The. work will be under direction of
one of the forest rangers and Mr. Mil
lard representing the Boy Scouts of
the valley.
The first camping trip of the sum
mer for Boy Scouts 'will start June
12th and last one week. The trip will
be made by auto truck under the per
sonal suiervlsIon"of Rev. Millard,
scoutmaster of the Medford troop. The
week will be spent on their new camp
grounds at Union creek. Much work
will be done on the grounds this first
trip and boys rendering the best ser
vice will rocelve a distinguished ser
vice medal. Besides interesting work
of building rustic bridges, cook ovens,
swimming pool, etc., there will be a
number of side trips into, the big
woods and interesting points.
Every Boy Scout In the valley who
wishes to make the trip should be
present Tuesday evening, June 7th' at
the Washington school grounds where
full details and expenses of the trip
will be explained.
This camp ground Is not for Med
ford Boy Scouts alone but for south
ern Oregon and If there are Boy
Scouts from the surrounding towns

'Tuesday only, on account of "Mary,"
! Monday night and Is expected to win
the verdict of one of the most popular
of comody dramas.
At the Rialto
"The -Fire Cat" is Edith Roberts'
latest picture and will bo the feature
attraction at the Rialto theatre. It
may be described as a colorful story
of life in the South American mining
-district. In the heart of tho Andes.
Miss Roberts depicts tho role of a na
tive girl of primitive passions. In one
of the startling scenes sho leaves tho
shelter of her mountain home to go to
the lawless town where she becomes a
dancer. Her motive -Is to mete out
revenge upon the despoiler of her
home. The picture Is remarkably rich
in picturesque backgrounds and Is
said to afford tho spectator a story of

McDonald appears in the opposite role.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
Excerpts from lecture by Andrew J.
Graham, O.S.B.:
In the year 1806 Mary Baker Eddy
whom medical skill had failed to re
lieve of a serious physical troublo, was
instantaneously healed through read
ing the Scriptures. Christian Scien
tists know that with her healing be
gan the modern fulfillment of Jesus'
promise: "When he, the Spirit of
truth, is come, he will guide you into
all truth." Instead of taking her phys
ical healing and losing- herself In the
throng of the unthankful, her grati
tude to God and compassion for suf
fering humanity led her to Investigate
and to meditate. On page 109 of "Sci
ence and Health with Key to the
Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes: "For
three years after my discovery, I
sought the solution of this problem
of Mind-hcaling, searched the Scrip
tures and read little else, kept aloof
from society, and devoted time and
energies to discovering a positive
rule." This rule she discovered,
stated, elucidated, and demonstrated,
over and over again, in healing the
sick, thus reinstating the most practi
cal feature of primitive Christianity.
All of Mrs. Eddy's writings bear,
directly or indirectly, on healing; but
In, the textbook, "Science and Health
with Key to the Scriptures," there Is
a chapter entitled "Christian Science
Practice," which will abundantly ex
plain to any earnest reader what this
teaching Is. To deny that Mary Baker
Eddy discovered the Principlo of
divine healing and that' by it her stu
dents are healing the sick and the
sinful, would be to close one's eyes to
the most far-reaching fact of modern
times. This thing was not done in a
corner. It is seen and known of all
men who have eyes to see and ears to
hear. We may well call it the renals
sance, or re-birth, of the vision of
Christ Jesus. The discovery and dem
onstration of Christian Science might
justify its beneficiaries today In re
peating Simeon's joyful exclamation:
"Mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
which thou hast prepared before the
face of all people."
Personal Testimony
Nor can I be silent at this time con
cerning that love of God which guided
me Into the land of Christian Science,
where mental bondage is broken and
freedom reigns. "I was sick, and....:. in
prison, and ye came unto me." 1 myself
verily believed that I ought to say and
to do many things contrary to what I
thought Christian Science was. To
that end frequently from a Christian
pulpit I assailed the name of Mrs.
iddy and vehemently denounced what
I thought her teaching to be. Up to
the hour of my healing, whioh was in
stantaneous, I had not read one line of
authorized Christian Science litera
ture, but had assembled In my library
many volumes and pamphlets adverse
thereto. In August, 1911, while In a
hopeless physical condition, I request
ed and received a treatment in Chris
tian Science. A part of that treatment
was a recommendation that I read
"Science and Health with Key to the
Scriptures," by hirs. Eddy. This I at
first refused to do, but between noon
and 1 o'clock on that day, while read
ing the first few linos in the chapter
on "Prayer," I found myself suddenly
released from physical Ills and mental
distress. The matchless worth of that
release no mortal words can ever ex
press. A new heaven and a now earth
began to appear in my thought, and
the precious truth of healing, widening
and deepening In my human con
sciousness, as brooklets widen and
deepen into rivers, has enabled me to
see more clearly and to work more In
telligently toward tho realization of
that vision which Christ Jesus saw.
Mary Baker Eddy
A Christian Scientist does not give
his testimony to exploit himself, but
to express gratitude for the groat
things divino love has done for him.!
The psalmist expresses this desire in
the words: "I have not concealed thy
loving kindness. from the great
congregation." I havo alluded to my
own healing out of tho deepest grati
tude to the Discoverer and Founder
of Christian Science. I had hated her
without a cause, I had ascribed to
her base motives, and I had conceded
to her no acknowledgement of good.
I opened the book, "Science and Health
with Key to the Scriptures," and read
on page 1: "The prayer that reforms
the sinner and heals the sick is an
absolute faith that all things are pos
sible to God, a spiritual understand
ing of Him, an unselfed love." My
heart was moved. said to myself,
Only one who has lived near to God
could write thus. With that honest
recognition of justice to Mrs. Eddy,
the healing came. About six months
afterward I began a careful study of
her life. From various sources I
found an illuminating mass of un
questionable testimony to her worth.
In studying the records of the courts
to which Mrs. Eddy appealed In order
to protect her writings and maintain
the truth of Christian Science un
adulterated, there was revealed cor
roborative evidence of her unselfed
love for humanity. This candid inves
tigation clarified my thought and deep
ened my conviction already formed
that Mrs. Eddy was the most remark
able woman since the birth of Chris
tianity. Her patience In suffering, un
swerving pursuit of truth, loftiness of
ideals, knowledge of affairs, mastery
of details, simplicity In daily life, re
sistance to popular applause, compre
hensiveness of tPunt tenacity ej
noble purpose, appreciation of tho
beautiful, couiiassion toward manklud
and devotion to God were some of the
qualities which fitted and enabled her
to rescue a crippled Christianity from
the feeble grasp of a sleeping world
and to restore to it the lost power
of physical healing, it is rapidly
coming to pass in all the world that
the great service to humanity which
this woman wrought is being told as
a memorial of her.
God Divine Principle
The facts, which preceded and ac
companied Mrs, Eddy's discovery of
Christian Science have boon touched
upon and are In the nature of history.
To understand the Science Itself, how
ever, it Is necessary to go deeper than
the history of Christian Science, how
ever wonderful, and endeavor to gain
a clearer thought as to the nature of
God. A right understanding of God
brings freedom and peace to those
afflicted with pain and guilt. The
world needs to bo redeemed, and you
know better than anyone else knows
that you, as an Individual, need to be
released from the bondage of sin and
disease. Many in this audience have
received the benediction of healing
through Christian Science. This fact
should keep us grateful, humble,
obedient, and active. There are others
hero who know not this wonderful
truth, who aro groping In the dark
ness of sin and disease, longing for a
Saviour. To these weary ones the
Christ, Truth, Is ever saying: "Them
also I must bring, . . . and there shall
be one fold, and one shepherd." The
promise and its fulfillment are for to
day. Healing and regeneration are
for this moment, for God is hero now.
Why is God here now, and what Is
God? Christian Science answers these
questions. On page 465 of "Scionce
and Health with Key to the Scrip
tures," Mrs. Eddy writes: "God Is in
corporeal, divine, Bupreme, Infinite
Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life,
Truth, Love." God Is all the life, mind
intelligence, truth, love, there ever is
anywhere. These qualities manifested
by men and women are tho reflection,
expression, of God, as tho Scripture
snith: "Every good gift and every per
fect gift Is from abovo, and comoth
down from the Father of lights." The
word "finite" means that which is con
fined within limits, as to time, place,
quality, or activity. Infinite means te
very opposite. God is infinite. Be
cause God is everywhere all tho time
He cannot exclusively bo anywhere at
any time. Because God is infinite He
cannot for an instant be away from us,
for there Is no other place for Him to
bo. We cannot be separated from God
even though we try, because He is
always everywhere.
Mrs. Eddy gave God a new name
which so appeals to human reason
that It destroys the sense of aloof
ness and coldness inculcated by deism.
She defined God as divino Principlo
Ho' who begins to seo and to know
God as Principle can no longer view
Him as a limited person dwelling
somewhere. To do so would be like de
claring that the activity of the multi
plication table is confined to the
United States that it Is inoperative
In ail other countries, except when a
very earnest petition on the part of
some one persuades It to act tempo
rarily elsewhere. In . the realm of
human knowledge, the mutual attrac
tion of the planets, the law of gravita
tion, the harmony of music, and the
rule of addition and subtraction are
absolutel continuous . and applicable
everywhere all the time, and so con
stitute a principle for human activity
Divino Principlo is not only continu
ous and unerring, but it is also
loving, guiding protecting, healing
Father-Mother God.
Jesus
It Is well at times to reflect some
what on ' the meaning of the words
Christ and Jesus. The teaching of
Christian Srience Is clerir as opposed
to that confused thought hold by many
pcoplo concerning him known as
Christ Jesus. Christian Scientists learn
to speak and love to speak very gently
and considerately on religious mat
ters. They earnestly seek to avoid
that wounding of others' sensibilities
which has been bo rife in tho past. One
of;the results 'of the old theological
systems was to load men to tho belief
that Christ Jesus was God. Jesus him
solf explicitly denied that he was God
in the words: "Why callest thou me
good ? there is none good but one, that
is, God." Mrs. Eddy says on page 332
of "Science and Health with Key to
tho Scriptures : "Jesus was the son
of a virgin. Ho was appointed to speak
God's word and to appear to mortals
In such a form of humanity as they
could understand as well as perceive.'
Jesus was not God. This is proved by
the fact that he was tempted and suf
fered. K a man, what, then, the dif
ference between him and us? It may
be answered that he was able not to
transgress God's law at any point; we
aro able, at the present Btage of our
growth, not to transgress at some
points. God Is just as near to us as he
was to Jesus, but Jesus was spiritually
awake and knew God was at band: we
aro asleep and know it not. This Is
tho difference between the man Jesus
and ourselves, a difference which
through the leading of Christian Sci
ence should grow less and less,
Jesus' mission was to show us by
teaching and examplo how to attain to
the fullness of truth. To accomplish
this he came to men on the plane on
which they lived and thought, and
spoke to thorn in a language which
they understood. By way of Illus
tration, we know that the mechanic,
In utilizing electric current some

correspond with receiving capacity, In
like manner, truth was taught by
Jesus, who Bald.: "I have yet many
things to Bay unto you, but ye cannot
bear them now." Through .Tesus the
activity ot-Christ, Truth, appeared to
men in gracious words and loving,
healing works. So complete did this

that Jesus the Christ boldly declared:
'Ho that hath seen mo hath seen the
Father." When Jesus had demon
strated over the temporal at every
point, all material needs and suffering
dropped away from him forever. This
completed victory over matter and so
called material laws is known In
Christian parlance as the ascension.
His ascension was not an isolated ex-
ericuco in his career, but a process
which began with bis birth at Beth
lehem and reached perfection on that
day when the disciples saw him van
ish from mortal sight. Jesus was our
elder brother, marking the way. Ho
journeyed toward and attained to the
goal of freedom from matter; so may
we do the same.
The Christ
Jesus became the model for us all
because he was always actuated and
guided by Christ, Truth. Tho sup
posititious distance which deism puts
between God and mnn Is filled and
ever has been filled by the unceasing
activity of Christ, Truth. Mrs. Eddy
says on page 332 of "Science and
Health with Key to the Scriptures":
"Christ is the true idea voicing good,
the divino messago from God to men
speaking to the human conscious
ness." Tho active love of tho eternal
Father is over all His works, and this
love Is Oie Christ Christ is - not n
competitor of God, but on emanation
from God and an importation from
uoii. Every manifestation of good In
human peace, joy, health, and har
mony la the Cnrist. Christ Is the
mediatorial path to God. Ho himself
says, "No man Cometh unto the Fath
er, but by me." Mrs. Eddy named her
discovery Christian Science. Science
means something that is known.
Christian Science means Christian
knowing knowing God and His unl
verse as Jesus the Christ know them.
Christ, Truth, is the alpha and omega
of Christian Science. When this truth
enters man's: consciousness he begins
to realize his at-one-ment with God.
Accepting nnd applying this Christ-
truth in his daily life is what made
Jesus the supremely good man. On
page 497 of "Scionce and Hoalth with
Key to tite Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy
says: "We solemnly promise to watch,
and pray for that Mind to be in us
which was also in Christ Jesus."
Christian Scientists adore the Christ:
they reverence Jesus. ,
The Bible
Christ jesus said, "Search tho scrip
tures; for in thorn ye think yo hayo
eternal life: and they aro they which
testify of me." Of course ho nlluded
to the Jowlsh Scriptures, for the Now
Testament was written at a later date.
However, I am certain you will all
ngree that we may rightfully include
the New Testament, for the latter Is
simply the fulfillment of the former.
For 25 years before her healing Mrs.
Eddy had been a devout student of tho
Bible. She was Instantaneously heal
ed while reading in the Bible. She saw
as no other person ha- seen in this or
any other ago since the early Christian
period, that Because the Scriptures arc
spiritual they are for that very reason
practical, and she has magnified the
teachings of the Scriptures In nil her
works as no other wrltor of modern
times has done. In 600 pages of "Sci
ence and Health with Key to the Scrip
tures," the literal quotations from tho
Bible aggregate 23 solid pages. All the
spiritual wisdom and understanding
which came to her was from the un
folding" Of Bible truth. Many books
have beon written on the HiblO. - The
greater part of them are called com
mentarlos, a title fittingly applied, for"
they aro comments on tho Bible rather
than elucidations of iu Mrs. Eddy's
writings open tho Scriptures from the
Inside out. On page 547 of "Science
and Health with Kay to the Scrip
tures," we read: "Tho Scriptures are
very sacred. Our aim must be to have
them understood spiritually .... It Is
this spiritual perception of Scripture,
which lifts humanity out of disease
and death and Inspires faith.'
The Textbook
It is fitting at this time to say some
thing about tbo Christian Science
textbook, "Science and Health with
Key to tho Scriptures," by Mrs. Eddy.
This book is not a commentary on tho
Blblo, but akey to It. Other writers
claim to bring out treasures from tho
Scriptures and to hand them to ub:
Mrs. Eddy gives us the key, snylng,
Open tho book and holp yourselves.
Any claim to excellency can bo sus
tained and maintained only by re
sults "by their fruits ye shall know
them." The spiritual virility and Illu
mination whlcn tho student of the
Bible rocolves through earnest study
of the Christian Science textbook is
undeniable proof that the latter is
what is claimed for It a key to the
Scriptures. Tup dominant thought of
the textbook is spiritual. If anything
else Is sought In Its pages It will be
unresponsive. To those who are hun
gering and thirsting after righteous
ness, and to the sick and sinful who
are seeking peace, it Is as deep re
sponding unto deep. Simply the read
ing of it has lifted thousands of suf
ferers out of despair. Friends: the
man who is really homesick to know
his heavenly Father, God, from whom
he seems to be separated, is ready to
study this textbook, and to gain
through Its teaching, healing nnd
purity and peace. The Christian Sci
ence textbook, through Informing and
guiding the truth seeker, disposes
thoroughly of a cold storago 'Bible,
by throwing the doors wide open and
exposing its treasures to all who de
sire them.
Christian Science Healing
What Is Christian Science healing?
It Is the overcoming of disease by the
same method which Jesus employed,
that Is, by understanding and utilizing
the infinite power of God who, accord
ing to the psalmist, healetb all our
infirmities. The results in Christian
Science healing differ from those
brought about by other methods in
that they are moral as well as pnys-
factory, and enduring. Jesus nevorl
employed nor recommended the use of;
matter in any form to cure disease. It I
Is not easy to see how a physician'
can be a follower of Jesus and yet
In big profession adopt a remedy ex
actly the opposite of that which Jesus,
by his acts, authorized. Tills Is no
insidious arraignment of the medical
profession. This is not an assertion
that medical doctors cannot bo Chris
tians. It does not impugn their sin
cerity and noble purpose. It simply
assorts what they themselves some
times vehemently declare, that they
do not follow Jesus' method of heul
Ing. Christian Scientists abide by the
fact written In the Blblo that "the ef
fectual fervent prayer of a righteous
man avalloth much." In one of her
books (Miscellaneous Writlugs, p. 96)
Mrs. Eddy says of Christian Science
healing: "It Is not one mind acting
upon another mind; It Is not the trans
ference of human linages of thought to
other minds; .... it Is not of the
flesh, .... It is not one mortal thought
transmitted to another's thought from
the human mind that holds within It
self nil evil." "It Is Christ como to
destroy tho power of the flesh; It Is
Truth over error." This definition
of Christian Science healing is a par
tial exposition of Jesus' words: "Yo
shall know tho truth, and tho truth
shall make you free." If one desires
a fuller explanation he must study
Christian Science, and learn how evil
Is explained and overcomo metaphys
ically. The Time of Healing
When may mortal man bo freed
from torturing woes? When may
orroneous thought be corrected and
physical healing como? When can he
bngln to awaken to that true likeness
which brings satisfaction? In other
words, when can ho begin to Bee the
vision of Christ Jesus perfect God
and perfect man? Only as Christian
Science awakens understanding and
reveals Spirit can tho answer to
theso questions bo realized. Jesus
gave this comforting advlco; "Ask,
and it shnll bo given you; soek, nnd yo
shall find; knock, and it shall bo
opened unto you"; nnd he gavo his
comforting promise: "Blessed nro they
which do hunger nnd thirst after
righteousness: for they shall be
filled." Wo gather from these state
ments that man's profoundeBt prayer
is an honest, sincere desire for health
and peace. Tho man may not know It,
but such a dosire means he wants to
know good, thnt is, God, hero anil now.
When sin and sickness nro tired of
themselves, when trust In material
pleasure is seen to be the betrayal of
one 8 highest good; when human pride
and self-will are humbled, then ono
may know thnt the ground of tho heart
Is being prepared for tho good seod.
These are somo of tho signs which in

So ho not discouraged; God hns no
favorites; opKrtunlty to know God Ib
never lost. "Awake thou that sleepest
and arise from tho dead, and Christ
shall give thee light." The tlmo for
healing is now; and tho opportunity is
for all who seek It.
The Handicap
Sooner or Inter mortal man Is forcod
to tho conclusion thnt ho has no
health, that Is, no healing power In
himself, and by tho same tokon ho
knows that no other mortal can heal
him. He finds himself suffering from
a handicap, which must be removed
by some outside power before ho can
tako any stop Into freedom. As a team
of horses, on a rough road, unnblo to
start the loud without help, is able
after 'the start Is mildo to draw even
a heavier load, so man, 'under the Bore
burden of sickness and sin, n)Ust have

In or understand Christian Science
before something can be dono for him. I
I love Christian Science because It
first loved mo; because while I was as
yet ignorant of God as boundless, love,
Christian Science stretched out, as It
wore, a helping hand. Tho Scriptures
state this truth on tho romovnl of the
handicap very beautifully, "Wo love
html because he-first lovod us." Di
vino Love always takes the Initiative.
This thought gives us courage ; but to
be fully benefited wo must turn fully
to divine Love. "It Is God which work
eth In you both to will and to do." It
is God who removes the handicap and
enables us to start. Wherefore, "Arise,
lot us go hence."
The Christian Scientist knows that
when failure stared at him on every
hand, nnd all othor so-called reme
dies brought no relief Christian
Sclenco saved him. Ho has learned
the universal applicability and abso
lute reliability of splrltunl truth. Di
vino Love offers no varloly of reme
dies. Tho same Principle which heals
a headache also purifies the leper and
raises the dead. Through understand
ing of this Principle" the Christian
Scientist helps to realize today the
vision of Christ Jesus In destroying
sickness and sin. . Ho begins to seo
with some clearness that becauso God
Is good and has all power, thorefore
ovll has no power, that sin, sickness.
and death have only a pretense of
power which Is accorded to thorn by
tho spiritually uneducated state, the
frightened, human mind. He loams
that this human mind, with Its fears
and fear-full Imaginations,, passes to
nothingness as the Mind "which was
In Christ Jesus" gains the ascendancy.
Ho knows that each step toward
health and peace taken by ono man or
by tho raco, has to start in tho Individ
ual consciousness, and that madness,
whether the madness of a selfish man,
In this audience or tho world's mad
ness of a world's wicked war, must
give place to Him of whom it is writ
ton: "He must reign, till he hath put
all his enemies under his feet" (Re
