MILES Dr. Robert Parker Miles, who lco tures here on the opening night of Chautauqua, was an intimate friend of the great Hoosier poet, James Whit comb -Riley. Dr. Miles treasures one of Riley's hooks particularly. It is an nutogruphed copy of "Green Fields and Running Brooks," on the fly leaf or which Riley had written the follow ing verse: " There are many sorts of measures For our joys and for our pleasures And the changing years still bring us newer styles; So we hazard the conjecture That the test of a good lecture May. best he -measured off by 'Miles'." Dr. Robert Parker Miles has had an unusual life experience. He came to America at the age of 18, a penniless English lad. He lived for the first seven days and nights on fifty cents. Up to that time he had received no schooling and could not read. Yet in his thirties, he had gone through a great university and was rated as one of the leading journalists of New York. Ho twice circled the globe In terviewing the great celebrities of the time, including Bismarck, Gladstone, Pope Leo, the German kaiser, etc. His stories of these men in the New York Journal commanded national attention and he was urged to present the story of his interviews on the platform. He was an Instantaneous success and for twenty years now has been one of the outstanding lecturers of the country. For ten years he has been in "Who's Who." WITH150IN CAST Al Jolson, the world's chief mangier of melancholy and bouncer of the blues, will be presented by the Messrs. Shubert in the sumptuous oriental travesty, "Sinbad," described as being a most delightful banquet of laughter, at the Page theatre Tuesday night, may 24th. Al Jolson has made the gigantic hit of his career of hits in this extravaganza. Altogether it ap pears that "Sinbad" with the inimit able Jolson. is as gay as. the spring and gorgeous as a rose in June, a sizzling cyclone of laughter, in two nets and fourteen resplendent scenes of glorious color. In addition to a roseate garden of gorgeous girls, Mr. Jolson's company embraces one hun dred and fifty actors, singers and dan cers and several of these former Broadway stars of the first magnitude, like Forrest Huff and Lawrence DOrsay. For the benefit- of the farm bureau home demonstration agent fund A.'C. Allen put on a moving picture show at Table Rock school last night. The Kame exhibition for the same cause was given ut the school house hall at Applegate last Saturday night which took in $38, and will lie given at Winter next Saturday night, immedi ately after which a dance will follow'. It Is expected that at tonight's meet ing of the Medford post of the Amer ican legion resolutions will be adopt ed urging the Oregon members in con gress to take action to have a retail nf Henry Albers whose case was dis missed hjr an assistant In the attorney general's office. Other Important bus- Al GHAUTAUQUA iness is also to lie transacted. After , the meeting an informal dance will be i held and the boys are all requested to I tiring their ladies.
