This Is an increase of $703, Slip from last week. N. Y. Stocks . NEW YORK, May 14. Shorts con trolled the stock market throughout today's brief trading period. Pressure from that source caused extrome de clines of one to almost five points among leaders, chiefly tho oil, motors and steel issues. Individual features of tho reaction included Petroleum, Houston Oil, Atlantic Gulf, Studebak er, Chandler, Bosch Magneto, Harves ter, Sears Roebuck, Famous Players and some of the other . unclassified specialties. Rails, notably Baltimore and Ohio, Colorado Southern,' New Orleans. Texas and Mexico and Soo also wore heavy. Losses were par tially retrieved for a time but the market gave way again In the final dealings. The closing was heavy. Sales approximated 375,000 shares. NEW YORK, May 14. Shorts dom inated the stock market during the greater pari of the' week but lost some of their confidence In the later deal ings when the money market evidenc ed a higher trend. Pressure was most often directed against steels, equip ments and motors, Including accessor ies, many of those Issues losing ground on rumors which dealt mainly with poor earnings and probable dividend reductions or omissions. Rails were steadier but a brief up ward spurt in that group was arrested when it became known that no action respecting lower wage schedules or freight rates would bo taken for at least another fortnight. Germany's complete surrender to the demands of the allies was without more than passing offect upon the securities markets but Imparted a de gree of buoyancy to foreign exchange. The British rate was at its highest in over a year and most of the continen tal remittances rose to maximum lev els since the war's close. American business interests are likely to derive substantial benefit from tho extension of import and export bills to six months by the federal reserve board. This action, It was believed, would tend to make our credits to foreign countries more liberal. Allis-Chnlniers . 3C.5 American.
