As a remilt of the supplenientiiry
niemljcrslilp campaign, twenty new
members, were added to the roster of
the Chamber of Commerce. The team
workers called on less than half of the
prospective members and therefore
the executive committed are noins to
submit a membership campaign plan
to, the hoard of directors. There are
at present 390 members, nil of whom
are responsible citizens, which places
the chamber in a belter financial con
dition at this time than during any
period of Us history. Tho new mem

Mrs. W. J. Plyinale. He died at Yreka,
Calif., April 1M, aL which place ho has

of Santiago anil Uuantanamo in Cuba
during the Spanish-American war, anil
of my home lows, Jacksonville, Ore

"After ' the Spanish capitulation,
which took place on July 10, 1898, at
Santiago, ' General Shatter urged the
war department to hasten .the ship
ment of tho Spanish prisoners to
Spain, In order that his army, which
was In a deplorable condition, might
speedily return to the United States.
More than half of his soldiers were
down with malarial fever or recover
ing from Its effects; tropical dysentry
and typhoid fever were prevalent; and
there were cases of yellow fever in
every regiment, it was reared Wat
yellow fever, which at that time was
rather a mild typo, although lots of
natives and a number of soldiers were
dying of II, would assuino virulent
typo and become epidemic.
"Such were the conditions when my
regiment, tho Fifth United States Vol
utitccr Infantry, commonly known as

vannah about Aug. 8, and arrived at
thfe following rule for the disposition
of tin cans and garbage)'
"Dig in your hock turd or garden a
trench nbnul flVfj foot long, two and a
half feet deep, anil a foot and a half
wide. Into this trench put your old tin
cans from day to day as they are
emptied, along with such garbage as
will not burn, and each dny cover
them with a tew spadefuls of earth
When tne trench Is filled to within
about eight Inches of tho top, fill It up
with Iho best of (he soil that has been
thrown out of the trench, and then dig
another. The digging of sncli a trench
should not take more than twenty
minutes or half an hour and when dim
should last a small family . nevertil
months; and when filled as above di
rected, tlio ground will bo just as val
uable for a garden as It ever was.

was clean; how to tell whether a wom
an is a good housekeeper, made a few
remarks concerning Mod ford nnd end
ed as follows);
"I have the interests of Medford as
well as the Interests of Jacksonville
at heart. I own more property hi Med
ford than 1 do In Jacksonville. 1 wish
to see them grow Into one large city,
not Medford grow at the 'expense of
Jacksonville, nor Jacksonville grow at
the expense of Medford, but both in
unison grow to greater strength and
power.
"I want the highway between Med
ford ond Jacksonville paved and trees
set out along Its whole length, until,
wltk tke future growlb in population
of your city, it skill become one elec
trically lighted boulevard of dwellings,
and homes from Medford through
Perryvllle and Madrona Park to Jack
sonville.
"This Bioy seem lo most of you-a
wild vision, but all that is needed for
its accomplishment Is that your city
shall increase Its population forty or
fifty thousand people; and this is as
certain to come as day Is certain to
follow night-. It may of course lake
some time, I may not live to see It,
but many of' you probably will."'

cleaning up of Jacksonville and gave

from a recent quarrel, which caused
the two girls to break a friendship of
a year. Two days uro Miss Davis re
reived a letter from Miss Hoy contain
ing a bullet.

Since the receipt of the German
proposals yesterday there has been
no further exchanges between tne
United States and Berlin. Tills state
ment was officially authorized after
the publication in this country of
