Ladies' and Men's Tailor Jackron County School Notes The local Institute at Phoenix last Saturday was attended by fifty some board members, teachers anil , princi pals. The morning was sunny, the building fragrant with flowers, and the program opened with a lilting song by Miss (Illicit. A discussion of arith metic in the grades by J. H. Tyrrell, was followed by results gained from use of the Curtis cabinet in our schools as reported by a number of teachers. Then the afternoon jirogram opened with recitations and two charming folk games by the Phoenix primary children. The subjects of Art In , the Rural .School and Music in tho Crudes wore handled by Mrs. Mona Ferns and Mrs. Fletcher Fish respectively, flie latter presenting admirable work with Uer class. Stultz of Jack sonville discussed consolidation of dis tricts, and new laws conce-nlug . it, after which Secretary Fuller, of Ash laud announced courses to be given at the Extension Summer Normal School ut Ashland. The most animat ed discussion of the day centered about the County Unit plan, as passed by the last legislature, and some force ful argument!) pro aud con were brought out, after introduction of the subject by Principal .lewett of Talent and Principal Milam of Phoenix.' . Several schools which have only eight month terms are closing tliist week.. " 1 ' " On Friday Inst the first club in the county to complete its project cele brated its "achievement day." This sewing club at Chaparal school In dis trict Xo.-'M, lias five members and was led to its success by .Mrs. lligliam. District No. 20 last week voted to bond for SHi,5uO in order to build a new school house. This ambitious dis trict, .formed by consolidation la.it June, of districts 20 and 52, and annex ation later of parts of district II, means to have a building of 3 or, 4 rooms. Another district or two are considering . joining with 20 so as to have the advantages of a . graded school. . .. . .... The preliminary ball games between the girls teams of the town schools have been eagerly watched. Applegate won over Jacksonville. Phoenix won Trom Central Polnti so the final game at the Talent meet on the 2ith will be played by Applegate and Phoenix teams. Some field meet features will be run off first by the dozen or so schools interested, beginning at I): 30 a. m.. At 11 o'clock the program will open, various schoolR taking part. At noon basket luncheon will be enjoyed en masse. The afternoon will be givon to addressen, and to discussion of con solidation among the several districts of tho Trail region. Recent legislative acts affecting our schools will also bt presented and explained. All schools are looking iifter stan dardization requirements, and It is probable that several schools not at taining the 14 points last year will do so before the close of this school term. IS KIDNAPED BY A legal clash is possible between Marion and Jackson counties over the custody of ICurl Frlel, juvenllo turgor, paroled to District Attorney Rawles Moore, as the result of the arrest and removal of Friel last Saturday by a Minion county deputy sheriff. The arrest, according to Prosecutor Moore, "amountH to practically kidnaping." Frlel was arrested last, winter willi William Morin for bad checks passed at Ashland. Morin Is serving a two years sentence In state prison. Friel nas paroled upon affidavits that lie wan under 18 years of age. Last Saturday morning, tho deputy from Marion county arrived at Jack' sonville with a warrant for Friel's ar rest, for the alleged passing of a forg ed chock on a Salem clothing store last November. It was explained to the visiting limb of the law by Shoriff Terrill and County Judge Gardner that Frlel was a ward of District Attorney Moore. He asked permission for Friel to come to Medford with him to talk things over with Moore, and was met at tho depot. There, according to the prosecutor, thn deputy was somewhat defiant, and whisltud Frlel on the train when it started, before he could do anything. After this Incident District. Attorney Moore telephoned the 'Marion county prosecutor for an explanation, that, of ficial contending that it was a case of official ovcrzcalousncss, and that no controversy was desired. He was In formed that there would bo "no con trovcrsy," if Friel was sent back from lipschurg at the expense of Marlon county. The Marion county prosecutor then requested that Frlel be allowed to come on to Salem, anil that the papers In his case bo forwarded, for perusal. This was agreed to.'. In a justice court at Salem Wednes day, Frlel was bound over to the grand jury, and so far nothing has been done towards his return to Jackson county. Friel Is 18 years of age0and his way wardness was blamed upon bad com panions, which influenced tho local authorities to securo a parole for him. He admitted passing the forged checks but promised to repay them. A job had been secured for him in this coun ty. His parents live in southern Idaho.
