The revolutions. It Is said, have been due to the struggles of the peasantry against the successive rule of the Ger mans, the Cossack hetman, the laud barons and, finally, the bolshevikl After telling about the revolts ol the Little Russians against "authority imposed upon them without their con sent," the article says: "A radical change has occurred In the psychology of the peasant masses, a change which may be termed "psy cbolgic atavism.' It is as If the souls of the people were changed back to the times of the 16th and 17th cen turies, the times of the Tartar inva sions, the slave markets of Constanti nople In the struggle for the right to live on the ground drenched with the blood of their forefathers. "Starving north Russia has sent forth scores of thousands of soviet employes and bag speculators (pi'rnons dealing In foodstuffs carried In bags on their back) to the fertile Ukraine provinces, In quest of food, while about 200,000 soviet troops uro sta tioned In the cities, towns und hamlets of the Ukraine. "Muny families from north Russia aro migrating to tlio south to escape death by starvation. At the same time the soviet authorities have taken stops to mobilize the male peasant popula tion and sond them away to the north and to the Ural, In an effort to combat the rebellion of the peasantry. The cruelties of tho Austro-Germnn period of occupation aro as nothing compared with tho horrors of the soviet activ Itles In tho Ukraine." ' Tho earllor cruelties toward the peasant rebels, such na flogging, con flscatlon of farm Implements and do plotlon of their resources, has been followed, the articlo says, "by punitive expeditions, wholesale executions, Esther Howard in "Sweetheart Shop" IRISHWOMEN ARE THESWEETHEART AT E IT hangings and shootings." This is well recognized throughout Ireland, even by Uritish government officials whoso task of subduing Sinn Fein militants and restoring peaco has been made ten-fold difficult by reason of it. Wherever one goes in this coun try ho hoars extolled the "spirit of the women." . Women shelter, feed and bind up the wounds of tho "flying columns" of the Irish republican army. They cot- lect money for the Dall Fircann, they sew and nurse and do a hundred other things that fall to women In war time. What somo of them do outside wom an's accustomed sphere of activities can only be conjectures. General Strickland, governor of the huge urea now under martial law, told the correspondent that women carried concealed under their skirts nnd cloaks tho rifles, bombs and revolvers which were used .by tho men resion sible for a number of ambushes of crown forces in tho Cork district. Tho supreme court affirmed today de crees of California courts upholding assessments mado by the San Joa quin reclamation board to pay for onstructlon to control river floods. Property owners appealed on the ground that tho board was without legal authority to make such an as sessment and that even if the assess ment was legal, Its levy on an acro- go basis, regardless of benefits to bo derived was illegal. After lauding, tho republican army tho proclamation continued: "We men and women of Ireland will I stand by our army till tho certain day I of victory. They include doctors, teachers and several young women conspicuous ly identified with tho Irish language revival. Harry It. Morton, the comedian with the fluent legs, who has helped to make "The Sweetheart Shop'' a big musical comedy success, believes firm ly in the fact that a young actor in seeking engagements finds either a feast or a famine in securing one. He tells of a vaudeville friend who had an act depending entirely upon a trained duck, which, showed remark able intelligence' In performing certain stunts making the act a novelty and very laughable. This vaudevlllian had been very fortunate iu securing en gagements and the act made quite a reputation until one day there came a lull and he was Idle much of the time. Then for months he could get nothing to do until tho time arrived when star vation looked him squarely in the face. ' The tragedy occurred on Thanks giving day. Penniless, hungry and re morseful he ate the duck. As tho last mouthful was swallowed a telegram was placed In his hand. It read: "Can offer you twelve weeks' work on the Gus Moon circuit for your act with the duck." He answered collect: "Impos sible to accept. Just ate the duck." "The Sweetheart Shop" will bo seen at tue Page theatre Tuesday night. STAR OF NO-HIT GAME COBLKXZ, April 10.
