W. Washburn of Xeah Buy who, though sue might easily have saved her life from the steamship Governor, preferred to go with her two daughters to death. 'he story was told by Mrs. W. 8. Ilillinghurst, who with her husband, was on the doomed vessel. They reached here at noon. The Washburn family was on deck a short time before the wreck, Mrs. HilllnghUHt sit Id, and pointed out their home to fellow passengers. When the crash came the full force of the im pact struck on the side of the ship on which Mr. and Mrs. Washburn were with their two daughters. The girls, Sadie and Oleno, were pinned beneath falling timbers. When rescuers came on tile Governor from the West allrt land, Mis. Ilillinghurst said, they took M v. Washburn off. Upon returning for his wife, she refused to leave without her daughters. Taken by the rescuers she broke, away at the rail and returned to the caip'n. The Gov ernor at tiiat time was settling rapidly ii rid it was impossible to save Mrs. Washburn. "The floor of our cabin titlted up wards. Then the lights went out. We made our way to tho deck, where members of the crew were shouting commands. "The wonderful brilliancy and clar ity of the night Immediately impressed us. I now wonder how two ships could collide in such a vividly clear nlKht. "It wan as himple to reaf h the deck of the West Hurt land as to jump from a low porch onto a lawn. Prac tically all the rescued were saved In that manner, though some people put on life preservers and entered life boats. "All of the passengers were only partially dressed. I put $H0 in my stocking when 1 left my cabin and that was lost. However, no one be grudges loss of money under such cir cumstances. "The officers and crew of both ships were remarkably cool. The work of rescue was carried out rap idly and it was all over before we Scarcely realized what had happened. "On the West Hartland the res cued were given every possible at tention. All around, nerve-wracked passengers clustered and many mum bled prayers of thankfulness at being saved from the sea." SEATTLE, April 1.
