It was only a few months ago that the 100 per cent Republican press of Oregon was so vocifer- ously deniaiidinn the election of Stanficld and the defeat of Chamber lain. Tarty harmony was the battle cry. Why elect a Republican president mid a democratic senator, when party harmony, was so essential to the advancement of Oregon's interests, and the proper solution of all national ills. Why indeed? Ore-jon's senior senator was promptly returned to private life, and Bob Slanfield sent to Washington with more votes than lie needed. Whereupon party harmony won, and the party leaders secured precisely what, they asked for. Hut now, if this same 100 per cent press: is to be believed, there is about as much harmony between Senator Slanfield nnd his Hopubli can colleague MeXary, as there was between Uncle Tom and Simon Leo-re. The distribution of Oregon pie, according to the Portland Telegram, is the fly in the ointment. The senior .senator has one idea and the junior senator another. More than that. Instead of Cham berlain throwing his monkey wrench into the G. O. 1'. machine, the journalistic .supporters of Stanficld make the astonishing accusation, that crime has been committed by Stanficld, at least as fur as the state machine is concerned. In regard to distribution of .spoils, the former sheep king has dis regarded the suggestions both of Tom Tongue, the efficient chairman of the state 'Republican committee, and Ralph Williams, the zealous member of the national committee. Again we have a Republican journalistic supporter of Stanficld to substantiate this charge. ind here is where the public forgetfullness comes in. Outside of the active politicians, there is no particular interest in this surprising outcome, so completely at variance with the partisan arguments dur ing the campaign. The election is oyer, Iherel'ore, there is no cause for crying over spilt milk, until another election is here. That is the American habit, and it is a habit which the politicians persistently ex ploit. Our reference to this situation only proceeds from a hope prob ably vain, that when a similar situation arises, some of the people will remember. As a jog to remembrance, we might add that the com mittee appointments have been announced. Under a republican admin istration the appointments for Chamberlain, we were told, would be insignificant. Well, here are the appointments for Staufield, and it vil be noted there is not a chairmanship ain"ng them: Civil service, claims, postoiTiee and post roads, public luiids. That's all. Senator Stanficld has been elected, and we sincerely hope he will be as useful to his state as his supporters predicted. !ut when after many years of service, he attains a place in the senate as nsetul to his state as the place occupied by his predecessor, we hope the parliznn arguments which placed him will not then be used to dis place him. In other words, we hope the people will remember. RipplingRhumos Walt Mason DREARINESS. IT IS A COLD and clammy day as T proceed to write these lines; (he skies are desolate and gray, no .sunlight on the water shines, and round my cabin by (he hay a bleak wind from the ocean whines. Oh, such a day as this, I know, inspired all sad old songs of yore; on such a day poor Edgar Poe embalmed his loved and lost Uonore, and Tennyson, knee-deep in woe, bewailed his Ilal lam gone before. And all the dirges men have known were born on such a day as this, when cold winds through the chimney moan, and rain gusts at, the windows hiss; and I would give a silver bone if I could think of joy and bliss. The rain gusts do not fall on me, for I am sheltered from the storm; the bleak winds blow in from the sea, but I am safe and sntjg and warm ; why don't I chirp a song of glee and swat, my lyre in proper form? "He still, sad heart," the Poet wrote, "and cease repining, right away; the sun, you think has lost its goat, and ne'er again will shed a ray; but hack of yonder clouds remote the good old orb is baling hay." Longfellow thus, as I recall, shook off the tendency to sigh; "into all -lives .some rain must, fall, if one man's wet the next one's dry so let me have your parasol, and I'll return it next Julv."
