ENFORCE THE SPEED LAW.
TT VKKV few (liivs some one is hurt or killed by an automobile in
Jaeksou county. There are wild outbursts of indignation for
perhaps 24 hours, then everything is calm until the next accident.
How long is this tragic farce to continue? Nine out of ten of the
accidents arc due to violations of the speeding law, and yet, as far
as the public is aware, there is no serious effort on the part of the
authorities to enforce the law.
As we have previously maintained a speed cop without n speed
onietcr eitiier on a machine or a motorcycle, to establish evidence of
excessive speed, is rendered ineffective at the outset. A capable clop
ut.v sheriff, we are informed is available, he should be properly equip
ped for the work at hand, and be placed upon a patrol of the Pacific
Highway at once.
The plea of economy, under present circumstances, is based upon
the indefensible theory that life is cheap. As long as the speed fiend
is allowed immunity, no person's life is secure. Penny lectures do no
good. The only cure for the speed maniac is punishment, and the
only way to secure punishment is to enforce the law.
