today by the Southern Pacific com
pany. Tho minimum will range from
30 cents an hour In the southern divis
ion to somewhat higher rates In other
zones.
J. If. Dyer, general manager of the
company ordered the following state
ment regarding the reduction posted
throughout the system:
"Effective April 10, 1921 this com
pany proposes to mako reasonable re
ductions In tho rate of pay of common
or unskilled labor in all departments.
In fixing new rates there will be taken
Into consideration decreasing cost of
living, character of work, etc., as well
aH wages paid for similar work In out
side! Industries. ...
"Request Is therefore inarto for your
concurrence In a minimum of 30 cents

tacular fire which destroyed the laun
dry on the roof of the St. Francis hotel
one of the most famous hostelies in
the west, early toda.y, frinhtened tho
guests, many of whom rushed into the
lobby but otherwise did no great ma
terial damage. The fire flared up over
the twelve story structure and attract

lombian treaty was reported formally
lo the senato today by the foreign re
lations Committee, but without , an
nouncement us to plans for its con

mittee being required to return the
treaty which provides for a $25,000.
