Humboldt county, far up on ihe northern Califor nia coast, Is not worrying about the Oriental Immigration problem, lor there are no Japanese In the county and for thirty-six years only one native of China has resided wiihin its boun daries. , Chinese were expelled from Eureka, the county seat, when Dtvld Kendall, a city councilman, was shot and killed February 6, 18S5 by a wild revolver shot fired during a tong war here. For a long time before Kendall's death there had been growing dissatis faction aniang the citizens and when tho councilman was killed , a mass meeting was he(d, committees named and Chinese were.ulven twenty-four .hours to leave the city under pain of death. To make the warning more effective, a life-sized and business-like gallows was erected In Chlnntown. When the next steamer left for San Francisco, all. Eureka Chinese and their movable property were on the wharf. Since then, no Orientals, with one exception, have been allowed to live In the county. - Tho one exception is a cook who, ac cording. to tradition was employed In 1885 by a trapper In Butbr valley. The Chinaman was not molested, partly be cause of his remote position but chief ly because he was married to a native woman and hud a family and also be cause he was employed by a man who was attached to him and who was known as h fighter. ; The old Chinaman Is still living in Butler Valley. Last year's United States census figures gave Humboldt fifteen Chinese but no Japanese. Of ficials here belfeve the fifteen Chinese are offspring of this one cook and the Indian woman. " , . ; Occasionally and at long intervals attempts have been made to bring Jap anese labor here, but the Japanese are not welcome. Several years ago a crew of Chinese fish handlers' were brought to Loleta, a' coast point, to help handle the salmon catch of the Eel river. They were at once locked in their car and the conductor, told to get them out ut once. No secoiul call was necessary. .
