Thus the freight train was marooned be tween the two track breaks nnd could not Uo released . until the railroad wrecking crew had repaired the track. The flood coursed northward from Vorhies crossing, following the "ditch beside the railroad embankment until It was stopped by the blocking up of the culvert near the lee plant where it again accumulated with sufficient force to wash out the tracks. Hoth sections of passenger train No. 54 were held at Ashland until the track breaks were repaired and the first sec tion did not reach Medford until long after 8 o'clock. The Kolb & Uill com pany was on the second section with Its baggoge an scenery. Hence II was nearly 10 p.-m. before last night's performance was started. The very large audience however waited patient ly, being entertained by the company's jazz orchestra. It was reported today that at one home between the lee plant and Vor hies crossing 100 chickens were lost when the flood floated the poultry house away. The south side of West Main street as usual when it rains heavy was In a badly flooded condition from curb to street car track and small lakes formed at the street intersections on tho south side of the street, as far as Luurol street. Acceptance by Judge Landls of $12,500 annual salary as supreme arbi ter of baseball, might go unchallenged "if tho motive back of it were not so apparent," Representative Welty had declared. Calling attention to the action of the supreme court of the District of Columbia in assessing damages of $240,000 against the big league base ball associations in suits brought under the anti-trust laws, and tho In dictment of players in Chicago for throwing games, he said: "While these matters were pending in the courts, this illegal trust made Judge Landis its chief arbiter. And why should they select a federal judge as umpire? Was it because they want ed to tell the people 'we are not an unlawful trust because Landls is at our head?' Was it because these baseball magnates wanted to create a favorable sentiment with the hope that tho su premo court of tho District of Colum bia would be reversed?"
