IN COUNTY JAIL
Arnold It. Carol, a Jywelry salca-
muri lit-ld In the county Jail, awaiting
action of the grand Jury that con
venes next Monuuy, on a churgo of
havlnir defrauded the Medford Auto
company of this city In tho purchase
of a Buick auto, has gone on a hunger
strike, and has not eaten for live days,
according to Sheriff C. E. Ton-ill.
According to tho authorities, Carol
refuses food because ho does not want
to bo to prison, and prefers death to
a cell.
"I told Carol today that he better
get some- gruh into himself," said
Sheriff Ten-ill, "and ho told mo he
was never going to cat until ho was
a free man. 1 told him, 'All right.'
and that 1 rould stand it as long as
ho could. He don't want to eat, ne-
cuuso lie don't , want to go to Salem.
Ho ought to bo fairly empty now."
The sheriff says Carol spends most
of his time laying on his cot in his
cell, and does not report for meals.
but thinks fellow prisoners givo him
food. Somo of the authorities think
the attempt is hulf-hcui-ted, and a
theatrical attempt to arouse sympathy.
At the present time a chiropractor
at Los Angeles, sentenced to 90 days
is on a hunger strike, and it is sur
mised that Carol got his Idea from
reading newspaper accounts of the
incident.
Carol is a young mnn, who says
his peplo llvo in Virginia, and are
well-to-do. About the middle of
January ho negotiated for a car with
tho Medford Auto company, and prof
fered a chock on tho Ladd and Til
ton Bank of Portland for 1800, and
gavo his note for tho tmlanca. He
took tho car on a plea, ho wanted to
make a trip to Ashland, and when
next seen two weeks later, was in
California. The day the chock was is
sued, a telegram from the Portland
bank said tho chock was no good, and
an all-night search for Carol was
niado without avail.
Ho was brought back from Cali
fornia, and whon arraigned In Jus-
tico of tho Peace Taylor's court, 'waf
bound over to tho grand Jury, and an
nounced that he would have two law
yers from Portland to defend him.
Later, from the county Jail, enrol
issued a statement denying police ver
sions of his escapades." .

minstrel shows. About $500 has
been spent In constructing special
scenery, electrical effects and other
stage decoration.
The effect of the weeks of many
rehearsals under Tom Swem, the
stage director, hua brought the com
pany to perfection and today they
could go on the Btage and give a fin
ished production. That was proven
at laBt night's rehearsal. Yet thero
will bo daily rehearsals until Mon
day. The performance Is full of snap
and go, novelty and fun. From be

Sunday's downpour of rain flooded
tho basement of tho Tumy garago on

cars in storage. The water, which
reached to tho flooring of the cars, was
pumped put by today nnd tho dittos
rescued. Close inspection of the cars
dovelopod that they did not surfer any
damage, and a test of tho batteries
showed that they wore not affected.

cent tryouts and local adherents are

come-back on the part of the Red and
Black men when they tangle with the
northern hoopsters. This game will
mean much to the local high school.

Few Southern Oregon series of past
years huvo aroused the interest of the
people of this section- as the one this

a record breaking crowd Is expected to
witness the big scrap. A fast prelimi
nary between a Medford team and the
Talent high school squad is being ar
ranged and tomorrow night's card
promises to bo-one of the best Med
ford people have had an opportunity
to see for some time.
Good news for Medford and Jack
sonville Is the tact that J. T. Gag
non only recently closed a contract
to make 50 car loads of lug boxes
(about 2 million feet of lumber) for
tho shipment of pineapples from the
Philippine islands, which it will take
five months to complete.
To get out this contract on time,
together with other orders, Mr. iag
non will at once Btart to operating
his west Medford and Jacksonville
mills night and day. The boxes will
be shipped by train from hero to San
Francisco and from there will be
shipped In boats to the Philippines.
Much interest Is being manifested
in the forthcoming talk 1y Edison
Marshall next Thursday night at the
public library under the auspices of
the Tri-L club ot the Y. V. C. A.
Tho subject of the talk is "Far North
and Far South; the experiences of a
writer." No admission will he charg

OBITUARY
DAVIS Joshua B. Davis passed
away this morning at tho homo of his
son-ln-lnw, P. B. Harrison, S39 East
Main street. Ho came here from San
dusky, Ohio about a year ago. Mr.
Davis was a Civil war veteran enlist
ing from the state of Ohio, serving
three years, and has held many offices
of trust and honor In his state and in
tho G. A. It. He was adjutant of
Chester A. Arthur post of this city.
A man of high Ideals and a friend of
everyone.
Deceased Is survived by his wife
and daughter, Mrs. P. U. Harrison.
Interment will be at Sandusky, Ohio.
