Car ter: ' ' i ', 'My dear Mr. Farrell: I ain mighty glad of the action of the American Legion In Medford In taking up the question of what should be our uttl tude In relation to the Japanese. I am very emphatically In favor of drastic action on the part of our leg islative "body in this connection. In the earlier days of the anti-Japanese agitation 1n California, I was inclined to think that they were unduly alarm ed as to the situation, but 1 have changed my views entirely as to that, and I think the earlier Oregon takos an emphatic Btand in this matter and legislates to koep tho Japanese from getting a foothold, the better. 1 as nuro you that your views and mine are Identical In this matter. Mr. Sheldon Is going home tonight and will be In Medford all day tomor row, and I am In hopos that you can talk with him personally rogardlng this matter as ho and I are In per fect accord and he can verbally give you a review of tho status of legisla tion along this line up to date. .. Asqulth, who ought to know for ho occupied that position for 11 years. As far as known, Mr. David Lloyd Georgo has not nuked for a raise in pay but his remuneration has been the subject of Inquiry conducted by a com mltteo of parliament which also Is ex amining Into tho salaries of all tho British cabinet ministers. Mr. Asqulth told tho committee that tho office of tho pronilor of Groat Bri tain Is a very exponsivo one and his duties cannot bo properly discharged by an expenditure limited to that amount. The former prlmo minister addod, that ho, himself, was a much poorer man when ho loft office than when he entered It. Mr. Asqulth explained that tho pro mler had to do a great deal of enter taining and afford hospitality to all sorts of conditions of pooplo both at homo and abroad but, under the exist ing arrangement, ho had to dofray this 1 expense entlroly at his own cost. Even If a government hospitality fund should bo provided for entertain ing distinguished foreigners, Mr. Asqulth was of the opinion that tho promlor'B salary ought to bo advanced. Mr. Asqulth had few kind wordB to say about tho privllego which tho pro mler haa of occupying tho official resi dence at 1U Downing stroot "It Is (quite true,"' he said, "that you live In tho houso free from ront, lM6s' epa!Ux;oB,1)ut 'H Is a very oxpon ijJY hoti Jos Uonp up.' This compares with a salnry of $76,000 and t-5,000 expenses for tho president of tho Unit ed 8tates; 600,000 francs salary and a similar amount for expenses for the president of France nnd of 100,000 marks salary and 600,000 marks ex ponsos for tho president of Gormnny. An English girl hnB just set an example ot patriotism to her sis- tors of this or other countries by cut ting off and selling ner hair and giv ing (lie proceeds to the government to help relieve Its financial situation. Vilas, located C miles northeast of the city, one of the finest and most mod ern farm homes in Jackson county, was totally destroyed by fire this mor ning. The loss Is estimated at about $35,000 on building and furniture, with insurance of $5000 on building and $2000 on the furniture. Defective wiring in the attic is thought to have been the cause of the fire which broke out between 6:30 and 7 a. m. The first known of tho fire was when flames burst through the roof. They spread so fast that soon tho whole building was enveloped and only a few minor household articles could be saved. Hours before, and in fact all day Sunday there was an odor of something burning about the house but It could not be located. The bungalow was a big one story and a half affair constructed about 12 years ago of concrete, stone and wood at a cost of $t6,000, and all Its appoint ments were modern. -The fireplace alone cost $1600 to build. The house was finely furnished. Mr. and Mrs. Vilas are making their honie temporarily at the farm house on tho property which is a consider able distance from tho burned bunga low.
