Prof. Jack Ilcmstrect staged his mesmerism performance and had a class of eight well known young men porforming ail sorts of odd stunts from singing songs to barking for a side show. This number amused tho large crowd who had a good laugh. Tho first act was a dance by Mutt Williamson anil four cannibal nymphs dressed In grolcsriiio costumes. Carl Tengwald rendered a violin solo in a dress suit and had some of the spectators bewitched with his art, until they discovered that Prof. Iloot was doing all tho artistic work behind a curtain. Tho musical numbers consisted of Hawaiian melodies by II. H. PrliiRlo, and selections by A I ford and Vance, which wore highly pleasing. BANK TRIALS Prosecutor Hawk's Moore lias asked the court for an extension of time to present arguments in the motion of attorneys for P. I). Mines, Indicted In relation to the Hank of Jacksonville failures, for a change of venue on the ground of prejudice. The prosecutor was originally granted until Tuesday morning for this purpose. The court Intimated then that ho might grant the plea for a change of venue. The prose cutor will fllo affidavits contending that the prejudice alleged against the defendant Is not sufficient to prevent hi ni from securing a fair trial. Prosecutor Moore said Tuesday afternoon that he had no strenuous objections to one case, or even two be ing transferred to another county, but that there were twolvo cases and 67 Indictments in the bank cases, and that the granting of ono might result In an. avalanche of motions for changes of venue and that with a precedent established they might reasonably ex pect to be granted. This would result in heavy additional expense to the county, and tho moving of a large part of the machinery of tho prosecutor's office away for an extended period. Do Witt, an Ashland taxi driver blamed by a cor oner's jury for the death of Mrs. Nona Jennings, killed in an auto accident on tho Pacific Highway Christmas eve near Talent. DeWitt waived tho pre liminary healing, and is out on bonds. Tho grand jury, it is said, will continue a further probe into the Hank of Jack sonville failure. - Tho trial of Lark Kvans, granted a re-trial by tho supreme court, on the grounds of new evidence, nftcr a con viction for assault and robbery last fall will bo heard at the petit jury term which begins February 2Sth. This case holds moro than ordinary Interest to a large number of Jackson county people, and promises to be ono of the, hardest fought cases In tho history of local jurisprudence. Evans Is out on bonds. Highway Superintendent Ilodgman returned Tuesday afternoon from the SisklyoiiK, nnd reports that tho road botwoen Ilornbrook and Slsson, Cnl., is ImpaRsuhlo on account of a heavy snow last Saturday and Sunday, and that autoists arc shipping their cars from Ilornbrook to Sacramento, Cat., and many are shipping from Ashland. Tho road over tho Slskiyous is pas sable, though on either side 1 tis bank ed with five feet of snow. A tractor hauled snow plow and a forco of men are employed keeping the road clear ed, nnd to assist in digging autoists out when they meet. These conditions are expected to prevail for another week. However, the police say that the persons under arrest had no con nection with the short change man here Saturday. Short change artists victimized a number of Grants Pass merchants yes terday, according to reports here, and some of the v'ctims of that city were expected to come to Medford this aftor noon to look over the suspects. It develops that tho two men and woman first showed up at Gold Hill at 5 p. in. Tuesday, one of them visiting a hardware store, making a small pur chase and tendering a $20 bill in pay ment. The party next appeared at Central Point at 5:50 p. in. where ono of the men tried to work the same game In three stores. The trio's next appearance was at the Hungalow grocery on North River side where tho same stunt was tried on Mrs. Jacobs, who quickly told her husband and ho at once informed the police. The night patrolmen succeed ed In locating the three last night. In their auto was found a satchel filled with small purchases, such as tobacco. cigarette papers, soap cakes, plus and the like. ' While the police claim tho stories told by tho men are conflicting and far from convincing, they can not be held long as so far there Is no evi dence against them. An appropriation of $550,000 for yards and stations on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts is recommended, while $4,907,000 is proposed for yards on the Pacific and in Hawaii. Among the provisions for expenditures on tho Pa cific coast are $1125,000 for tho Marc Island, Cal., navy yard; $1,405,000 for the Paget Sound, Washington, navy yard; $1,025,000 for tho naval station and $177,000 for an ammunition depot at Pearl Harbor: $100,000 for a similar depot at Mare Island and $25,000 for one at Pugot Sound; $200,000 for the naval base at San Diego, Cal.; $40,000 for a submarine base at Coco Solo. Panama canal zone and $150,000 for a similar base at Pearl Harbor. The committee recommended an appropri ation of $200,000 for the navy yard at Philadelphia as compared with $1,200, 000 appropriated for this year, cut the appropriation for the Norfolk. Va., navy yard from $520,000 to $250,000 and has made no provision for the yards at Washington, D. C.', or Ports mouth, X. H. No provision was made for a naval station at Guam for which the navy de partment recommended a $1,499,000 appropriation.""
