DRIVE TO SAVE I'hoenix Joins with Medfnrd, Ash land and other places to secure Jack son county's quota of JtiOuo necessary to keep from starvation the a,500,00U children of Central Europe, who must have help from America or die soon fi:'m hunger and cold. The follow ing have been made a committee to receive gifts and help as they can in the work: Andrew llearn, J. M. Ha der, M. J. Norris, Mrs. Donna Graff's, Mrs. Kred Furry, Mrs. V. K. Ander son and Joseph W. Angell, pastor of the I'hoenix church. This committee announces a special "soup and bread" supper to be given Kriday evening, February 4 at Clyde Hall, Phoenix, at 7:30, to which every body Is asked to come. No fixed charge will bo made for this supper. Each one is asked to pay as libe rally as he can. and all the proceeds jwill go to help save from death those j who are starving. j It was decided by the Phoenix com , mittee that mention should be made In our appeal, especially of the 3.&0U. 000 children in Central Europe who look to America (through the Hoover jfuud) to save them, and also of the j 15, 000,000 now actually starving In North China; so that all who desire Jto give to both of these may have every opportunity to do so. "Whatever is received this week by the i'hoenix committee will go to the I Hoover Central Europe fund for chil dren, unless the givers specify that it is for China. All who desire to give (to the appalling need in China, should I mark their gifts "China," und these jwill be sent at once by the I'hoenix j committee to the "American commit tee" for the "China Famine Fund," re- cently organized in response to re ; peated appeals from U. S. diplomatic and consular of fitters in China and ! from many missionaries who have jlived for years in the famine district covering 100.000 square miles, and I having a population of 40,000.000, .who are now almost entirely destitute j of food nnd are trying to live on leaves, bark, etc., and of whom 10,000 are now dying daily. The 1 5,000. ') will soon die unless America helps them. Friday has been designated ns self denial or "last" day in behalf of the starving children in Europe and people in China, and it is hoped that I many here will observe it as such. At the soup and bread supper Friday .evening at Clyde hall, envelopes will , be provided so that all who attend may specify whether they want their money to go to the children of (Nsn- :tral Europe or to the people of Cii'na or both. ' lty hearty vote of the congregation present last Sunday morning at the Phoenix church, a special offering will be taken at the church next Sun day morning for the China famine fund.. ' , ! Bartlett IS AND ASHLAND. Feb. 2. This Is "Kducn tlonal Week" in Ashland, with Tues day specifically set apart for a notable observance. The day was ushered in by an open forum luncheon at Hotel Austin, with a number of out-of-town prominent educators present in nddl tlun to the home folks. Among the number were Prof. John C. Almack, of the extension department; Irs. Fox, dean of women, and Prof. Uo'j bins, dean of the commerce depart ment, all of the state university. Supt. Briscoe, of the city schools, presided ut this gathering. The literary and musi cal program followed the luncheon, the address of the hour being by Prof Almack, on "Ashland's Possibilities as an Kducational Center." Last week. Herbert Cuthbert, executive secretary of the Puclfic Northwest Touting asso ciation, visited here, and as an expert passed upon the merits of Ashland as a resort cenler, paying a glowing trib ute to its numerous advantages in this respect. At the address on Tuesday of this week, however, the opportunities, or rather possibilities, of developing educational facilities here were partic ularly dwelt upon. On Monday evening Mrs. Fox, dean of women at the mil versity was tendered a reception at the home of Mrs. J. P. Dodge, on the Boulevard, where an opportunity was afforded for townspeople teachers, und members of the local chapter of the Daughters of the Kevolutlon, to meet the dean of women in a social way. On Tuesday evening the scene shifted to Chautauqua Pioneer hall, where, under auspices of the chatnbnr of commerce, business men of tho town fraternized with the agricultur ists of the surrounding country dis cussing the development work Incident to activities of the Farm Uureau, especially insofar as they affect the mutual welfare of both town nnd rural districts. The Farm Uureau has been styled the commercial club of tho country. This hypothesis being ap plicable, it follows that the organiza tions should meet on n level both iu a social and industrial way. The gather ing on Tuesday evening was a repre sentative ono, and its occurrence Is but the beginning of a series of others which are to follow at stated Intervals. The family of Harvey Gearhart, who left Ashland sometime ago, have decid ed to locate permanently nt Napa, Calif. A tag day campaign In behalf ot tho Albertlnu Kerr Nursery Home ot Port land will occur on Feb. 12. This la a meritorious Institution, its beneficent activities being well known and its needs being championed by residents of this county In general. Emll Pell and Henry Provost attend ed the gathering of hardware and im plement dealers of tho state, held In Portland last week. The entire personnel of the Amer ican Syncopated orchestra were treat ed to an auto joyride throughout the town last Friday preliminary to their entertainment at the jirmory in the evening. A tragic and pathetic feature is be ing developed incident to the death of late, at a sanitarium near Alanmgordo, New Mexico, of an ex-service man named Charles Armstrong Helms, who gave his address as Ashland, Oregon, the specific location being on the boulevard. The deceased claimed American citizenship, but served with a Canadian contingent overseas. The name is a familiar one, and in re sponse to requests from New Mexico, attempts are being made hereabouts to got information regarding the de ceased soldier. Kev. W. L. Mcllliiger, former pastor of the Christian church here, now oc cupying a corresponding position at Ogden, Utah, occasionally reverts to his old occupation ot teaching as tem porary supply in the schools ot that enterprising city. In the summer sea son he is primarily engaged on the Chautauqua circuit throughout territory embraced in the 'ntennountaln region. The Chautauqua winter course here will Include a concert by the New York Chamber of Music as a major attrac tion, Wednesday evening, Feb. 9, at the armory. This aggregation Is said to be one of the finest musical organi zations extant. The Hawthorne school Is expanding, another department being necessary. As a consequence the second grade has been established, Its teacher, Miss Maud Hedrick, being a newcomer here. The shrine meets in Masonic hall, Friday evening this week. A heglra of the youthful element oc curred in the direction of Portland ru cently, no less than half a dozen husky lads proceeding there for a final ex amination, both physical and mental, preliminary to entering Undo Sam's aviation service. Jlminie Pefley, Perry Norton, Carrol Thornton. Herman Trott, Gus Wolcott and Virgil Kamsey are among the number. A preliminary examination nearer home will lie nun plemented by an exacting one nt re cruitlng headquarters in tho metropo lis. "Am I My Hrother's Keeper" was a query propounded by James L. Him rod of Chicago, prominent Chautauqua lecturer, who addressed tho congrega tion at the Methodist church last Sun day morning. In discussing the social ist question, the 8eaker voiced a pro nounced opinion that the revolutionary teds were not so much to be feared, eventually, as the "Pinks," or parlor bolslievlsts, whom he termed the great I ML IS LAUNCHED BY GOLD K. Now for some time conditions have become very bad here. It Is becoming impossible for a lady to walk down the street without being Insulted by hearing the most vulvar language in tentionally or unintentionally mouthed for her especially.. Groups of men and boys are known to stand on corners and make obscene remarks about nearly every woman who passes. Hooze is entirely too plentiful. Men not only make asses of themselves with it hut the boys are buying It and going hume intoxicated. The raid on tho still up the river started the ball rolling and no time iu the history of the town has such it de termined stand been taken to clean up the town. Tho city council headed by Mayor Johnson is unanimous iu a de cision to put a stop to the lawlessness here and a whole lot of people are backing the council. Friday night, 1C. T. Ross, who claim ed he had taken only one nip, was wracking the peuen and quiet of Main street and was arrested by Marshal Stickle. A. A. Uallliiger of Grants 'ass who also had only onu dilnk (?) upon seeing Ross arrested knocked the policeman cold. Karl Pankey Immedl utely took Stickles' placo ami brought Uallliiger before the mayor and Deputy Sheriff Win. Cook rounded up ltoss Saturday morning Uullinger was fined $10 and Hoss was fined t-0. Later Friday evening another of the Hoss boys became too ramhumpttous and with a companion, F. II. Smith was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Ale Mahou nnd were taken to Jacksonville where Saturday morning Hoss was fined $36 and Smith was fined $1S. M. S. Johnson, the mayor, wants the public to learn, quickly, that he means business and will punish every violator of the law to the limit. It is a crying sluime that stuff like this must be published but tho days of squashing a crime to protect a fellow's name or the dignity of the town are gone forever. This paper Is going to give every offender full publicity In the future and seo If a littlu public shame will do any good. He and John Kigg attended the gathering from Ashland, accom panied by Cash Wood, secretary of the Jackson county contingent of the "Y" organization. 'As an instance of the sympathy prompted ly the privations endured by the children In Europe, one mem ber of Ashland post of the American Legion, has adopted three French war orphans, the term "adoption" Implying a guaranty as to providing for the waifs during the present year. At a legion meeting on Feb. 8, the members will discuss merits of two bills pending before legislature, these measures being connected with relief as proposed thru channels of the state farm nnd home project.
