There are over 58 million in Japan. Ohvionsly Japan must have, anil should have- an outlet for its excess population. .According to a dispatch from Tokio today, the'l'nited States pro list on the killing- of Lieutenant. LaiiHun contains an intimation that Japanese penetration in Sihei i.i, will he opposed by I'ncle Sam. Japan resents the suggestion that while the I'nited States holds fast to hegemony in the west, she is denied it in the east. There is valid ground for Japanese resentment. If the Anglo Saxon world is to deny her expansion in both the east and west, it is difficult to see how trouble can be averted. For Japan must fi some where, and if she can't io peacefully, she will 1'ijlit her way, for no nation can be expected to siitn her own death warrant. The situation clearly shows the necessity of an understanding with Japan, which recognizes her needs, as well as her obligations. Cer tainly the world must be larne enough lo allow Japan elbow room without encroaching upon tin: color question or inflaming American susceptibilities. Japan is the leading nation of the far Hast, her vital interests are woven inextricably into the Oriental fabric; it would seem not only good business, but good policy to grant her a leadership in the eastern world, which tire United States enjoys in the western world. Tho ipiestion, of course, is a complicated one. Ariti-Jnpiuic.se feel ing in China is strong, there is a basic incompatibility between the Samurai idea in Japan and the Soviet idea in Kussia, no Anglo-Saxon could view with complacency the threat of a Yellow race alliance, and yet something must be done to furnish Japan room for normal growth, or war will be inevitable. The problem is a real one, and of immediate importance. The new Republican administration-will need the best ability- the greatest de gree of foresight and diplomatic skilly jn effecting a just and desiri able settlement of this perplexing question. ' - 1 Rippling('ijinQs ttiMrt VfeK Mason THE KNOWING ONE. II1' I HAD John II. Jlilton's harp, my brow in wreaths arrayed, I'd sing an ode about the sharp who truly knows his trade, he it the honing of a carp, or filing of a spade. Nine workmen tried lo fix my ibus, which had been hitting wrong; for days I saw them with it fuss, the while their bill grew long, and I could only weep and cuss, when scheduled for a song. They held an inquest on my cart, that was of little use; they took the motor all apart, and pried the crankshaft loose, to find out why things wouldn't start when they applied the juice, And when their greasy toil was done, the boat was just the same; the whatyoueallit wouldn't run, the thingumbob was lame; and it bail taken all my inon to pay them for their game. They might have made good auctioneers, or coroners, or clerks; they might have won out herding steers, or preaching in (he kirks; but they were lemons, it; appears, among a motor's works. And then came workman number ten, when those nine jays had gone; yen, one of nature's noblemen came skipping up the lawn ; he came to earn an honest yen, and did, so help me John. He was a man of pep and sense, a workman skilled was he, and in an hour he banished tiienee the grief that spoiled my glee, and my old car would jump a fence or climb a banyan tree. liulgn ruml, starling al $10 up lo nearly S700 In less than a week's time, and It Is to Uil: spirit.. rut lior than to miy ImllWilual or organization, Unit praise should be glvcn.- Over three score r Ihe starving children or -Middle .Kiirnpo nro to lie fill and clothed iIiii-Iiik Hie winter, thanks to the people of Jackson county who have responded to nil appeal for help. In referring to his remarkable restoration to health, by Tanlae, he said : "About five years ago I suffered "n general breakdown. My principal trouble was nervous indigestion. My appetite was very poor and my food seldom agreed with me, and 1 had to live on a very restricted diet. I suf fered a great deal from headaches and dizzy spells; I had severe pains across the small of my back and was badly constipated most of the time. In fact, I was so weak and rundown I was not abb- to attend to my duties. "This condition made me very ner vous and I could not sleep at nlylit. Frequently I would He awake most all night and was in that condition more or less for five year:. My physician said he could not do anything for me and suggested a change of climate. 1 then moved to Texas and went back and forth three times, but did not get the relief I had hoped for. Fi nally, I got so bad off 1 was not able td get around with any degree, of comfort. I was also told I had heart trouble. "I had read about Tanlac and, as it had been very highly recommended to me, I decided to try it. I got a bot tle and had taken only a few doses until I could notice a marked im provement in my condition. ' I noticed especially that I was not troubled any more with sour stomach after eating, which was a great relief. , 'l kept on taking Tanlac until I fully regained my health. My appe tite is splendid: I enjoy my meals and I do not find It necessary now to take any laxative medicines of any kind. 1 can sleep much better and am not nearly so nervous. "I take great pleasure in recom mending Tanlac to anyone who needs a good system builder, or who suffers with stomach trouble, I have recom mended Tanlac to a great many of my friends and am pleased to reach others by giving this statement for publication."
