Briscoe adds -a brief mes sage, congratulatory in sentiment as to conditions past, present ad future, epitomizing as follows: "The dawn of the naleildar year marks near the end of the first semes ter of the school year, in which, thru the hearty cooperation and the earnest efforts of the patrons, the past semes ter has been an exceedingly successful one. The student body is pleased to note the whole American-like spirit of the students of the Ashland schools, and looks forward to the remaining semesters with thoughts alive to the education of the scholars. Opportunely, - the American Legion is also heard from, and the local or ganization, which according to the tenets of the legion, spells "loyalty" with a capital "L," sends through its commander, Glenn E. Simpson and his efficient subordinates, the following greeting in behalf of the rank and file wheresoever dispersed: "Ashland post No. 14 of the Ameri can legion faces the New Year with plans for the liveliest and most active year it has had since its organization. Included. In these plans are those. of complete reorganization and the or ganization or the Women's Auxiliary. Within the next weeks the member ship expect to start activities with a bang and carry on actively during the 'ear- . TO OPEN AT NAT FRIDAY Medford sport fans hull with delight the official ushering in of the basket ball season for the local high school Friday night when the M. H. S. quin tet will contest for honors with an alumni representation at the Natator ium. Since tljo opening of practice January 3rd an average of twenty-five candidates have seen turning out every evening and, according to Coach Kluni "they are. coming along fine." Sherwood at guard and Coleman at forward are the only men who played last year but with the abundance of good material the student body is con fident of a winning sauad this year. "Dub" Watson, who played on a ser vice team lasc year, singier, urn I Campbell and J. Y. Watson are the strongest of the candidates contesting for forward positions. "Reese" Bnugh man had proved to be a strong man at center while, besides Sherwood, there will be four strong men trying for a berth at guard. They are Prescott, Jerry Young, brothet of "Cork" Young, edford s famous guard in 1916, Mfke Jacobs and Hill. ' Although the schedule for the sea son has not been announced yet it is understood that games have been ar ranged with Beveral strong northern teams. It contains every ele ment the screen story demands ro mance, intrigue, pathos, humor and tragedy. Pauline Frederick as Jacque- The forum meeting of the Medford Chamber of Commerce on next Wed nesday will be held at the Holland Hotel and there will be an address by John C. Almack who is assistant direc tor of the Extension Division of the University of Oregon. Notice has been given that thero will be several topics of interest to the community that will be presented and these should receive tho careful atten tion of the members. These proposuls will be submitted In the form of a motion and if adopted will go to .the board of directors as a recommenda tion to them for their consideration. The weekly forums of the Chamber of Commerce have become the most Important part of the community life of the city. , It is thru these forums that Medford has become known thru out the entire state of Oregon for its progressiveness. It is the out of town guests, which the members have from time to time invited to attend, that have circulated tho many stories of how Medford does things, which has brought this enviable, reputation of this community. With a record attendance two weeks ago of 105 and last week of 81, it is evident that the members of the Chamber of Commerce are beginning to realize the Importance of the forums and that individual effort on the part of ' every member Is necessary to piiiintnln ana increase the efficiency of the organization as well as obtain ing a greater reputation in the stuto at large. ;) . : - Notice - ! Jack sonville came out to meet our high school teams on last Friday evening. The girls game was especially interest ing. During a large part of tho game the score wus close, sometimes one team leading and sometimes the othor. It. was not until the Inst whistle was blown and the score counted that the result wus known. The final score stood 2S to 30 in favor of the Apple gate girls. The boys game was more easily won by Applegnte. The Jacksonville bunch are u fine set and led by Professor Stultz and a spirit of fair play were a pleasure to meet. After the games the Applegnte girls, according to their custom" furnished a lunch to the visit ing teams nnd officials. Our tenuis are scheduled to meet Rogue River nl that place on Jan. 21. On Monday our school again began work. Miss Hathaway having a bad cold has not been able to teach the past two days. Mrs. Schell substituted for her while she was away. Miss Margaret Schell left for Ber keley, Jan. 1st to attend tho University of California. She is visiting with relatives in Sim Francisco until her school begins.
