Arbury tell mhat a commu nity Service program would do for Medford, shows more plainly than any thing else how very' much Medford neflds such service ' .J)r'., Arbury is here In the interest of the National Community Service ln corjwnitod. and he is asking that Med ford extend an invitation to a group of specialists .to cohie here for the pur pose of organizing a local branch, and demonstrating just'what can be accom plished by such an organization. He is not asking us to raise a certain sum of money tp.pa- these exports; they are paid from a national fund. -Med-fprd's contract and obligation with this national organization would be a mere nbthlng. Scarcely more than a 'hole some interest in Its own welfare; a desire for community organization, work and spirit. It is human nature,' collectively and Individually shaking, to shy - away from two things a contract with par ty or parties which Includes a stated sum of expense, or a contract which promises exceptional value without the 'expenditure any money. . And so It is in this' case; it is very hard not to be skeptical, and be looking for the nigger in .the woodpile, when such a ' proposition as Mr. Arbury offers Is put up to the town, But if every person in .Medford had heard him Wednesday evening, they would certainly undor- ! stand how such benefit could be de rived for the cojnmunity, and ' insist that this, wonderful opportunity nnd advantage, virtually profforcd as a gift, be seized at once. -. i i Like the famous, blundering' Ole 01- 'son, we people of Medford," don't often make our goal in one jump, and this time, fortunately for us, we have the ' chance of making it in two jumps. So Friday evening at 8 o'clock,' a socond meeting yill be held at the library, for. the purpose of heading again the out line of a community service work and , determining It Medford will accept the opiwrtunity held out to it.; H Is to be hoped that tevery person In Medford, who has the Jntereats of the town at , heart, will be there. tt see that their i toffn takes enough interest in Its own , welfare , to embrace, such- an oppor tunity. , Mr Arbury will prove to you what this organization means to the towns and cities which have tried, it Out; ho will show you just why and how we need. It. Ho will convince you that Jt . helps the young and the old, and makes, a DtVonger, happier more harmonious community." a: It Is not what we do when we are working that denotes the man, woman or dhlld, but what we do in our leisure 'moments, and organized play, interests and endeavors, are some of the things which a community ' service brings about, ' . v.. - .. . ' I' .The social strata of Medford, as it-is In most towns of the west. Is very tlp ttlted and broken into bits none an tagonistic to the o.Bier yet in some yay never meeting or blending together in a common interest. We cannot go on : to very high things until the mclting . pot of social life simmers down to a j point that suits each knd every one of us. wefnave passed the pioneer stage when each could relyi on his own en deavor, and scramble' for- himself; those days are past when the ery isolation and hardships endured by each was the -'common . factor that, brought about the neJghboHy ' feeling between people living miles and miles apart--and when the word neighbor meant neighbor. ' ' 'We have built up a beautiful little city here, you and I, and all the rest of us, but we have been eo busy doing it that we have forgotten the' old and valuable art of being neighborly, and we also need to" foster some agency which will revive the lost art of play among us. "Let us learn to enjoy our city to the utmost enjoy it together, and be pVud of it together.. Mr. Ar bury will tell us how this can be done by small effort and expense on our part-. Every Individual and organiza tion In the city should be back of this movement and lend their support by attending the meeting Friday evening to hear him outline the plan. 80 be there to help "Ole make it in tho'sccond yump."
