arEDFORD MATL MEDFORD, 01' M i OX, AVT.DXRKDAY. JANUARY -r, mi PA OF FIVE PRAISED, COUNCIL i Praise for Chief Lawlon and the ' Medford fire department for the way j in wliich they handled the fire in the Liberty building last Sunday night was , given by H. H. Pomeroy of Portland, chief doputy fire marshal of the atato, : this noon at the conclusion of his in , vestigation. i iAs to the origin of the fire Mr. i Pomeroy and Chief Lawton are of the belief that it was due to defective wlr ' lng In the basement. "There was an ah- ' sence of oily rags, waste or matter of the kind," said the deputy fire mar shal, "in which spontaneous combtis lion could have started. The house ' keeping of the basement was good as basements go. There were no piles of rubbish or other refuse so often found in basements of business buildings. - cnieE iawion usea excellent judg ment in his method of fighting the fire and your small department did very 'fine work. In fact, had the depart ment been very much larger they could not have handled that fire any better. "This Is all the more remarkable in that there is nothing so difficult to i handle as a basement fire, and your department was greatly deficient in suitable equipment to fight a fire of . that kihS. " t.i understand the major part of this basement fire equipment was authorized by the city council and brdf.-red some time ago, and will soon be here. Any experienced fire fighter must take off his hat to your chief and department for their splendid work of ' Sunday night;"-;' "" It developed today that the city council will soon meet with Chief Law ton to take up the matter of getting further equipment, such as new gas masks, both for the regular firemen and for outside assistants, and port able lights to illuminate a dark, smoke laden basement. -The matter will also be taken up with owners of business buildings with basements, of cutting holes thru the first floor of such buildings, and cov ering them with metal covers, so that when a fire occurs In a basement, val uable time' can be saved to the fire men. Instead of having to chop holes thru the first floor to get at the fire, thoy could just lift the covers and set the fire-fighting basement pipe appara tus through a hole Into the basement. r- , Livestock PORTLAND, Jan. 5. Opening prices which ranged from hnlt cent to two cents lower, with march $1.72 to $1.72 Vfe and May $l.G(i to $1.6714, were, followed' by a decided further setback. Continued liberal receipts depressed corn. After opening 3-Sc to' 7-8c lower, including May at 74 3-8 to 74 c, the market underwent a further sag. Each jit ney must now also pay $:!0 license, a year instead of $ig na formerly. Iho councilmen also discussed the matter of scttini; up a standard of character for each driver of a jitney or lntcrm-ban car, but finally dronneil the subject, as it was a very ticklish one which tltey did not care to tackle.
