The month of May was a chilly one with over the average annual amount of rain for that period, according to the official records of the weather bureau. There were four days with socallcd killing frosts but the lowest killing frost day was on the 30th, with a temperature of 30 degrees above in Medford, which meant a temperature of several- degrees lower in the low parts of the valley. Joe Benjar mln, Portland, . lightweight boxer, scored a technical knockout over Ed die Shannon of Tacoma, in the sev enth round of a scheduled ten round bout here last night, when Shannon's seconds threw a sponge into the ring. Shannon had been rendered practical ly helpless. Shannon showed good form only in the fifth round, but ho was sent to the floor in the first and sixth by Benjamin. ". Results of the other principal con tests included three more technical knockouts. Sammy Gordon, Portland won from Dick Brenton, Los Angeles, when the lattor's seconds threw the sponge into the ring during the sixth round. The men are bantamweights. The bout between Abe Gordon, Port land, and Mike Mitchell, Seattle, fly weights, went to Gordon, Iln the fourth round.
