S, CITIES MAINTAIN PLACE IN CENSUS "WASHINGTON, May 23 The pop ulation rank of the cities will show a large number of changes when the statistics of the 1920 census have been completed. Several cities, have moved up into the 100,000 class in which there were DO municipalities in 1910. Some of the cities of that class, whoso 1920 populations have been announced have outgrown others In the sanio class while some having less than 100,000 ten years ago have taken rank well up among the country's SO largest cities. Akron, O., has shown the most growth 'among the larger cities. H has passed eight cities having 100, 000 or more In 1910, whose 1920 populations haro been announced. The rank of the various cities can not be determined until statistics for all have been announced. New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, first, sec ond and third cities of the country, will continue to rank in that order but the rank of other cities is uncer tain. From statistics announced some of the changes shown in rank are: Washington, D. C, passed Newark N. J., Cincinnati and New Orleans. LVewark, N. J., passed Cincinnati. COMMUNICATIONS Praise for Road Work To the editor: In these days of un rest and general unsettled conditions, we hear a great deal about high cost of living, high taxes, graft and incom petency applied to everything that Is In any way connected with public af fairs. In fact the prevailing spirit seems to be a slam at the other fol low. During the last month I have had business which called me over a great part of the county, and have had a chance to see the condition of the rural roads, as well as to see and talk with several hundred expert road builders (nearly every one knows JOYFUL EATING Unless your food is digested with out the aftermath of painful acidity, the joy is taken out of both eating and living. KMfOIDS are wonderful in their help to the stomach troubled with over-acidity. Pleasant to take relief prompt and definite. MADE BY SCOTT BOWNE MAKERS OF SCOTT'S EMULSION just how it should be done) and while nearly every man will allow that our roads are in better, eondition . than common at this season of the year, the one general compluint is: that so much time and money is wasted in having laborers getting to work late and quitting early, In order to reach their homes, which, many times, are miles from the work under construc tion. We farmers who have had teams on such work can speak knowingly when we say that a well organized crew, under rigid supervision could save the county fifty per cent cost and the work done better. As the outlook is for better organization along these lines, as well as to see that the man is worthy of his hire, a word of commendation might not be out of place. When the county began tearing up the roads north of Central Point last spring with their big scari fier, there was a howl sent up that was distressing; we ail felt that we were ruined. But following it came the grader, the roller and the sprink ler; then the big trucks began haul ing and spreading the surfacing. again followed by roller and sprink ler. Not a day's layoff, but the every day steady grind. Result: The work is nearly coinploted, no one has been seriously inconvenienced and we have had the pleasure of seeing one road crew that earned their money. Even the men on the job say it was a pleasure to work hard when seeing something accomplished, and they proved this by their courteous man ner in meeting and passing teams and cars, which has often been spoken of by people who used the roads most Such management and such work Is to be appreciated. If the same earn est business like system is curried out all over the county we think that the old gag of incompetency and graft which has so long been applied to our supervisors will be replaced by coop oration and just compliments.
