JJut tor the quadrennial delerium of a presi dential election, we might have such a leader now, but will every snip oiriciai ooesscd ny tne scramble lor votes and the captain in retirement, there- is no chance. It is not a pleasant picture, nor a cheering prospect. The only hope is a storm will not break until the elections are over. THE FAVORITE SON MANIA. THERE should be a law against favorite sons. Voting for a man for any public office because of his resi dence is utter nonsense. There should be only one con sideration and that is the candidate's qualifications for the particular job. If he has the necessary qualifications, the favorite son business is not needed, if he hasn't the neces sary qualifications, then the favorite son business should be abandoned. Hut the iarce will be continued just as long as the people submit to it. It is only another manifes tation of the need of a political awakening, among the rank and file, and the readjustment of political affairs upon a rational and common sense basis. dent, on the republican ticket, at the primary election. Mr FREE AIR THE AIR we breathe is cheaper than anything; there . is; custodian or keeper, can't say, "The price has riz!" We hear no far-fetched wheezes from profiteer ing gents, explaining that the breezes have gone up fifty cents. "The stock of wind's exhausted," no doubt they'd promptly say, it' they should be accosted, to fix the price today. Grown tired of endless failing at things that cost inc dear, I stand outdoors inhaling a lot of atmosphere. I work my ancient bellows in ecstacy and glee; no greedy, swinish fellows can charge it up to me. Oh, for the love of Peter, let's breathe it and en thuse! No corporation's meter will measure what we use. Some day they'll learn to cinch us, and tax us for the air, and cops will come and pinch us if we exceed our share; but in tho balmy present they hardly dare to try; the breezes, sweet and pleasant, are free to every guy. Some day you'll get your zephyr through rusty pipes, like gas, not as the care-free heifer that gambols in the grass. Some day a grim collector will climb your creaking stair, will come, a grisly spectre, to tax you for the air.- f Medford Attention!
