Lark Kvnns in connection with her having testified at her preliminnr; hearing last week on the charge of the larceny of the automobile of W. G. White of Grants l'ass, was dis missed. The dismissal came on a technical point raised bv her attorney, Gas Newbury, that she had testified under a voluntary oath not authorized by law to be made bv a defendant in a preliminary examination, when she testified that she bad married Evans at Taconui eight years ago under the name of Wallace Music. The dismissal of the perjury charge has no bearing on the anto larceny charge on which she wns bound over last week to the grand jury by Jus tice Taylor. Paul's Electric Store Medford OIL HAS SPREAD OVER HE The steady growth of Industrial America Is observed by all, but we need the help of census statistics to realize the rate of that growth. The power used In our manufacturing has about doubled in the past sixteen years; the kilowatt-hours turned out by our public utility stations have in creased eight or nine fold in that same period. Indeed, the singlo state of New York will use far more pow er this year than the whole country did In 1902; (And so the demand for lubricants becomes stronger on the rood, on the farm, and in the mill. Still, while wo think of this rapid development of power as usins inereuaed amounts of oil, it is equally true that oil saves power; so that if machinery multi plies manpower, lubricating oil is a good and faithful servant that de serves more than a pusHlng thought. With all these demands for fuol nnd lubricants, who can venture an estimate of cur needs even ten years hence? Whence will the petroleum come to meet these needs? The river of oil representing our 1 9 IS con sumption drew from the ground more than one-twentieth of the quantity estimated by the United States geo logical survey geologists as the con tent of our unrecovurcd underground reserve, and It also took nearly one fifth of the oil stored above the ground. The estlmnto of about G billion barrels as now available is far less impressive when we realize how fast we are using it up and that while we havo burned and wasted less than one per cent of the coal resources of the United States in tho last 100 years we have apparently usod up 4 0 por cent of our uvnilablo oil supply in only 00 years. This Is why the hunt for oil has becomo world-wide and suggests a compelling reason for Americans to lead in that hunt. AMERICAN SHIP SINKING AT SEA LONDON, April 21.
