wed ford ymrc TmHurrB, !rrcnFOTtp. Oiw:ont, tttcrday, aptjtl 20, 1020. FACIE SEVEN' Y tf 1 r i E H.C.L. IWUSHIVGTOiN", April 20 Declar ing that the costs of food distribution are too great, the federal trade com mission today recommended improv ed marketing facilities and processus attthe great consuming centers as a long step towards lowering the high cost of living. 1'The movement of food should be ma'de most direct from field to fac tory," the commission declared in a report on wholesale marketing of food, one of the series in the food L price Investigation ordered by the president. (The report asserts that the rapid i . rise in food prices in recent years is ' . not so significant as "that the money 1 ' indomes of large numbers have fallen fae short of a proportionate ln ' crease." . i i J'The weekly wage of union organ ized labor in 191S bought but 77 per cent (according to the department of laoor), as much food as in 1913. The larger number of service incomes to not fal) within this organized group and are much slower to respond to J the pressure of a higher cost of Hv ' ing. Moreover these Incomes are for the same reason usually less in aniount. It follows that for very i large numbers of people receiving relatively' small incomes, a week's wage in: 1918 was purchasing much . less than 177 per cent of the food it : bought in;i913. Food absorbs 3S.2 per cent of the average American household's in come. It therefore constitutes no in considerable part of the wage and 'salary cost in all production. Of two ' . communities whose products enter -the same markets otherwise equally, that one which supplies its working peoplo with food at a lower commu nity cost either will pay its working people a higher real wage or will have a niarked advantage in under-selling the other thru lower productlon.costs. Both results may in some measure follow. A wise governmental policy to wards the food Industries may lower production and distribution costs to gether with the final sales price with out propbrtioiially raising govern mental costs, thus reducing the na tional cost of lood. ;' ! y. RIVERSIDE RIPPLES Tho H)ld store buildinir, which hn stood at the mouth of Foots Creek for 40' years or more, is a thins of the past, as F. I'. Elliott has b?en busy the past week tearing it down and will soon begin the erection of the new store spoken of in one of last week's issues. Riverside people are watching with pleasure the im provements at this place, as it means much to the community in general. The Recreation Club will hold t'nei;' next meeting with Mrs. R. W. Eng lish. A novel feature of the meet ing will be the buffet luncheon which will consist of some one article nf food prepared by each lailv present no one knowing what the other iu:s prepared. The community club gave a parLv for Mr. and Mir. C. R. lloyd at their home at the Del Kio Saturday evening. It was intended as a farewell to Mr. and Mi's. Royd, who expected to lenve soon r Pasco, Wash.,- but we arc happy to relate that they may slay on at the Del Rio until the fruit ciom is well under way. About thirty-five friends were present and dancing was enjoyed until a late hour, when the, ladies served n delicious lunch, pari of which was a huge angel food cake, made by Mrs. llovd. Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Pickett were Medford visitors Saturday. Mrs. Pickett was having dental work done Messrs. Rerkhollz and It, W. Kl den of Willow Springs district were callers nt the G. II.
