EVERYONE makes mistakes. lint only fools make the same mistake twice. The world to the west seems t.i he slipping into the latter category. Japan is overcrowded. She must have room in which to expand. Instead of basing plans of expansion upon peaceful negotiation, Japan is apparently relying upon the old exploded methods, which reduced the kaiser to a wood chopper and destroyed one of the world's greatest empires. Tho -recent war, according to reports, has gone t. Japan's head. (She emerges as the one belligerent who profited hy it. Never before has the Nippon kingdom been so prosperous. Instead of learning the lesson of the war that imperialist ifi conquest is dead, Japan is now eontrollet by forces that believe imperialistic conquest for her ha; just begun. Tremendous sums have recently been voted for an ex pansion of the Japanese army and navy. Taking advan tagc of the general prostration and confusion, caused by the war, .Japan has captured Vladivostok, and is extend ing her domain in Siberia, by force of arms. Liberal pre tests within the empire are silenced by the usual method, of an absolute monarchy. Extension of the suffrage and labor organization, arc cried down as the propoganda o traitors. A thousand incidents could he related to show the al most uncanny analogy between the, Japan of today and the Germany of: twenty years ago. It is generally believed tlu British-Japanese alliance will be abrogated. The visit of the Prince ol: ales to Australia is rumored as Ihe opening wedge for the dispatch of a large British fleet to the Pa ic. Anti-Japanese sentiment in Australia is spreading like wild fire. The recent references by Secretary Daniels to the pressing need of it larg fleet on the Pacific coast, is only another sinister omen. "What is the world to do? Learn nothing from the re cent catastrophe from which civilization is still staggering? Continue the old game ol: armament competitions and me al antagonisms, go on sowing the dragon s teeth of hos tility and discord, until the inevitable holocaust descends again? It would hardly seem necessary to preadi tiie lolly ol such it course. And yet there is no indication ol serious preparation for any other. lthout. the participation ol: the United states tne League of Nations is dead. And yet the most conspicuous political fact today is the support given to the one man in this country who Jias done most to Kin it. jv man who noi. only opposes this league ol nations, but opposes any league of nations, is the man with the most aggressive personal following in the country. AVhat is one to make out, od.n f 1 lie obvious answer, in our opinion, is that the, world is now suffering from a war reaction which has thrown it, into a moral and political stu- tf I 1 1 i f 11 i . j . . l .
