THE MICHIGAN ELECTION THERE is great surprise! and coii.side'ralile dismay ox pressed locally over the sensational defeat of Genera nr .11. fl.. 1. 1 - r.ti . . n oou y senator .joiinson in i lcingan vesrerciav. Tins is duo principally to ignorance of the conditions in the Wolverine state. The predominant issue in Michigan was not ihd presi dential primary but the Newberry election scandal. In vot ing against "Wood the people of Michigan didn't vote against the general as a man or a candidate, but against tlie campaign methods with which his name had become as sociated. Senator Johnson campaigned the state largely on this issue. He was followed up by Senator Borah'.. Both men are strong campaigners. Senator Johnson is. probably the most effective, single handed campaigner in the country today. The field had been prepared skilfully for his par ticular purposes. Hiram sowed the seeds and Borah drilled them in. "Whether the charges againstW.ood's, ca;nnaigii metb ods were true or not they were not denied. The people of Michigan believed them. The charge that Dick llaiina, the son of the well known Mark, headed tho list of contributors to the million dollar "Wood fund, did not lessen the public feeling against a repetition of the Newberry scandal. Among shrewd political observers Johnson's victory we be lieve, was generally conceded, although the landslide which today's returns indicate, was not generally expected. There will be some to regard the result as a victory o the out-and-out treaty opponents, of whom Johnson and Borah are the most conspicuous examples. It our liilor million is correct, iiie treaty was not even indirectly an issue. But if it had been only Johnson votes could bc.'sr counted, and the sum of the anti-Johnson votes promises to exceed the ualilornia senators total. There is no doubt that Johnson's stock as a presidential candidate will be materially boosted by the Michigan vote. But to us it is inconceivable that the .Republican party will select lor its standard hearer, any man who is linalterah! v opposed, to any workable peace t reaty and any world or ganization to prevent luture wars. On such an issue, the certainRepublican victory would dwindle like a snow-ball in the sunshine. Walt Maton THE GARDEN. IN my common workday duds to the. garden I repair, and I plant souk; luscious spuds and sonic boneless nutmegs there. And I see my neighbors gay burn the costly gasoline,-while I plant my bales of -hay, and the early Lima bean. And they go, all primed with cash, to the moving picture shows, while I sow my succotash, Brussels sprouts and things like those. , They'll be buy-' ing costly eats (and the price will make them cry), while t pluck my home grown beets, and consume the rhubarb pie. I've a little plot of soil, fifty by a hundred feet; there'll I raise by honest toil, till tho tilings I wish to eat. I'll have pumpkins I can sell, squashes till you cannot rest, and young onions that will smell much like Araby the blest. I'll have things to boil and bake, I'll have cauliflower to spare, and my cabbage-heads will take premiums at the county fair. I'll have growing greens enough all my family to keep, and the Cost of Living stuff will not rob nie of my 'sleep, if the boys would fall in line, raising garden sass this year, they might drop the plaintive whine, "All we eat is so blamed dear!" Tho complete text of Herbert Hoover's telegram expressing his wil lingness to enter the presidential race follows: , "I had not wished to enter nor could I heretofore sec any real public service by onturing into partisan po litical discussion, more especially pendins tho clarification of tho di verging views of tho different groups in tho parties c-n the great issues. The recent develuptnents over the treaty, slni!nution In adjustment of our great economic problems, and particularly the man'y urgent ropreuontatlons that I havo received as to the situation In my own state convinces me that it is my duty to confirm the action that my republican friends there have al ready taken without consulting mo. I differ Just as strongly with this view as I dlffor with the extreme po sition taken 'by tho president on par ticipation in purely Kiffopoirn affulrs. This issito is whether, with reserva tions protecting our '; position, wo should join the moral forces of tho world to reduce tho dangers again growing around us, or whether we will, by pretense of any insularity that we do not possess, sit by in the face of growing armies, navies, na tlonal antagenisms, reaction, nr. -in reverse, the spread of Bolshevism, thru much of tho world. This would he the defeat of tho hopes for which our sons were sacrificed in tbla war. Stability Abroad Kssential' "Kntirely asido from this moral idealism of the league and the danger to our own ultimate peace, tho solu tion of cur domestic problems, such as the size of our armament, reduc tion in taxation, and the prevention of agricultural and industrial depres sion and consequent unemployment, is dependent upon stability abroad and upon our access to the world's markets, which today are endangered by discrimination against us thru our inability to exercise cur veto under the treaty. I believe it is the. tran scendant service which tho republi can party can render to tho nation to settle a league efficiently designed to give us these national protections. So One Can llictate i "Xo one should ho ablo to dictate the policies of great parties, yetlevery man and woman has a right to Aecide what issues and measures he will support. If the republican party, with the Independent clement of which 1 am naturally affiliated, adopts a for ward looking, liberal, constructive platform on the treaty and on our economic Issues and if the party pro poses measures for sound business administration of tho country, and is neither reactionary nor radical in its approach to our great domestic ques tions and is backed liy men who un dcubtedly assure the consummation of these policies and measures, I will give It my entire support. While I do not and will not myself seek the nom ination, if it is felt that the issues necessitate it and it is demanded of mo, I cannot refuse service. "I1BRUKHT HOOVER."
