E IRSE STATE RIGHTS IS NEW JERSEY PLEA II TRAVELS 5452 MILES This Is Said to Equal a Year's Wjear and Tear by the Average Motor Car Owner. jQ FURIOUS DRIVING AIL THE WAY Triplex Springs Protect Car From Road Vibration of Driving at an Average 32!2 Mile an Hour Speed. Driven continuously for seven i:iy!i ami seven nights, over i.Tilinnry s;uli urban roadways, an Overland ! slock car has established at. Indianapolis. 1ml. , a new uniw'i'iclal world's mileage record for a lilit ear under IHS hours of incessant driving. The Overland 4 in the seven days and night of this remarkable endur ance run piled up record of r , 4 Ti 2 . 1 "i miles. The car finished the ",riml on the same Fisk tires which it started. To make this, nuiy record, the drivers of Overland 4 maintained an average speed of 32 ',4 miles an hour, 24 hours a day. (!asi.'ino mileage was i!0. 24 miles a gallon. The. consistency of Overland 4 per formance, is shown in this tabulation of each day's run. The first day and night, the speedometer registered 74!) miles. On the second day, the mark was 77S miles; on the third, 747 miles; on the fourth, 7U3; fifth, SO!); sixth, and on the last lap of the new unofficial world's record, 753 miles. The test, the first of its kind to be tried and actually accomplished by a light car, started at 9 a. m. on Feb ruary 25111 and ended at 9 u. in. on March 3rd. The run was conducted liy the Oiuson Company of Indianapo lis, distributors for Overland cars. The mileage and gasoline records are certified by the following observers; Howard F. (Howdy) Wilcox, win ner of the 191!) Indianapolis Speed way 500 mile racing classic; Munrce K. lloblet. secretary of the lloosier Jlotor club of Indianapolis; and It. H. Scrogin, editor of the lloosier .Mo torist. Although the new Overland 4 with Triplex springs had been tested 250, 000 milos under all possible weather and road conditions 1cforo it was placed on the market by the Willys Overland Company, the officials of the company feel that the Indianapo lis endurance run is one of the most convincing demonstrations yet made of the reliable, economical perfor mance of the car and the road-comfort qualities of the now famous Tri plex spring suspension. Officials of the company witnessed the start and the finish of the seven-continuous-day run. Careful exam ination of the car and its power plant after the run convinced the Gibson company that the car was ready to re peat the endurance test of the IBS hours of furious driving and largely because the car had been protected by the new Triplex springs. The run is considered the highest possible verifi cation of the ability of this new spring suspension to protect the car from road wear and provide big car riding comfort in a motor car of short wheel-base. The Chamber ui Comim-n-e by the unanimous anion o. ihc I uanl of ili leciors lias endorsed the Hicher Kdu catinual It.-lirf bill which calls for an appropriation of i.2ii of a mill for the support of the university, the agrirultural college and the normal school. It is tealized that the young men and women of the state have the right to demand opportunities for higher education and it is the duty of every citizen to amply support our institutions to enable them to receive that which they are entitled to. Knowing that the attendance at the present time at the university. ugrl "lilt urai college and normal school is more than double t he capac ity of these institutions and that there is a great lack of equipment to properly instruct those who are now in at tendance, the board believed it lie unanimous s"iiliinent of the com munity that proper financial assis tance be given these institutions to enable them to perform the object for which they were established. WASHINGTON". Mar. 29. The eighteenth amendment to the consti tution, known as the prohibition amendment, is legislative in nature and revolutionary in character ac cording to Attorney lleneral Thomas F. McCran of New Jersey, in opening l:is argument before tho I'nited Elates supreme court in LNew Jersey's suit to have the amendment declared void and tho Volstead act unconstitil tional. Kight points were raised and dis cussed in the argument. Attorney General McCran's brief declared that tho eighteenth amend ment was not constitutionally pro posed; that the proposal is subject to judicial review; that congress dill not by two-thirds in numbers of both houses affirmatively vote for the pro posal of the resolution; that three fourths of the states have not ratified in the constitutional sense. In a supplemental brief filed by New Jersey's attorney general, an entirely novel point is made, "that the right to amend the constitution is a right of the people of the I'nited Statics as distinguished from the peo ple of a particular slate; that the people or the I'nited Slates have only national powers, the police power be ing reserved to the slates, and the right of internal police being a rigid of the people of New Jersey over which the ;.cople of the I'nited Stales have no control. This right may not be taken from them without their consent." Adv. Union Sales Stables and VETERINARY HOSPITAL Horses bought, sold and exchanged by D. S. Litts. Dr. 0. A. In a Maxwell there is hardly a superfluous pound. Like a great cross country runner, it carries no handi cap in weight. It is made of fine steels, and these steels have that magic combination that metallurgists strive for light weight and extra strength. These steels are made to order for Maxwell. They are treated in great furnaces, and. they are strong beyond belief. Poimd for pound, theyequal the steels in any car built But they more than repay for their high cost. They wear. They stand terrific abuse. They defy time. liut their greatest task is to lighten the burden of the Maxwell engine, enable it to perform brilliantly, and make gasoline deliver extended mileage. Thus you will understand that rise of Maxwell the world over, that ever growing friendship, that ever in creasing demand. Today nearly 400.000 itvuse. In 1920, 100,000 more. Still this will fill but 60 of the world's require ments for this remarkable car. A. W.Walker Auto Co. MEDFORD, OREGON Afr mitt tr gathm Aarg mill OK Him J 1 1 ' A ...... . 'J ii
